So all along the watchtower won...

Seeing as though Hendrix couldn't even tune his guitar, is the successful move her to go with a crap singer

If you didn't already nominate the song I just have, Sussex, you will be wishing you had.

yeah i thought it would win easy but just got pipped

I was dudded.

I suppse that when you mentioned lack of cliched/mainstream suggestions, Sussex, Hellelujah (by Jeff Buckley) was one of those you had in mind?

If AC had chosen Hurt, it would have been.

Joe Cocker's changing of a song that was a Ringo Starkey vehicle/novelty filler, to a blues classic has always been mentioned when it comes to great cover versions - and was the first song to mind when I read the theme. Watching it last night had me in awe of how good it is.

Mentioned it before but it doesn't usually stop me...

The Guardian's poll for best ever cover was won by Kate Bush singing Rocket Man. I don't think it's available on record, she did it on some BBC programme. I don't like the song, but her version is great.

If she's playing the ukulele, then that's the one.

I think it was first released on an Elton John covers tribute album but it's not available anymore. It's a reggae version.

Actually, while on Kate Bush (in a manner of speaking) I'm a big fan of Running Up that Hill by Placebo, as you chose.

Another big favourite (to make it a five with Hurt and Song to the Siren) is The Partisan by Leonard Cohen.

Yep, I reckon Nirvana's version is an improvement on Bowie's.

Doing a Bowie song better is a big achievement, imo.

As is doing a Beatle's song better than them.

Cocker did it at least with A Little Help, unsold on Bathroom Window.

I thought Elton John's Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds better than the original.

This was a big hit in Aus in the late 60's(?) when it came out.

The Lulu version is ok. I reckon that is the only hit version there' been in the UK (number three).

Prefer the Bowie out the three though.

Just looked it up on Wiki. The Lulu version was produced by Bowie and Mick Ronson and Bowie and the Spiders from Mars played on it during the Pin Up sessions.

Marc Almond was a big Procul Harum fan and once covered their Salty Dog.

Mind you it wasn't salty before he covered it.
