the sports thing wouldn't work for me - it would end up too Brit-centric, and would have too many things unknown to me. I struggled enough with the music one.

we'd have to have a theme Favourite World Cup Wins - the first one in with 1966 would win, and I would be struggling with too many options.

Might want to remind us what year Australia won the biggest prize in world sport again? It seems to have slipped my mind :hide

of course, popularity equates with quality.

None better than the Music thread to illustrate that for us.

Well, it kind of does in this context....

World Champions of football, a sport 3 billion people regularly watch..... or dominate rugby league, that 13 people like :hmmm

There is no greater achievement in international sport than winning the football world cup

well, that is true.

But not to a Kiwi. What matters to them, they really dominate - far easier a pool to do so, of course.

Nor to an Australian - even though winning it might change that - whereas when I was growing up, the pinnacle of sporting achievement was the Ashes, the (cricket) world cup and the olympics. I very probably knew very little if anything of the world cup of football until I was grown up.

could be worse, you could have grown up as a scot and your first memory of a world cup be 1978 :no

went to Argentina with a real sense of anticipation only to draw with Iran and lose to Peru in our first 2 games :horse

Just voted GJ?

Wasn't that sure which was yours this time, but I'd guess Warren Zevon.

I might have mentioned it sometime before, but (despite the terrible name) Bandcamp is a great site and service for struggling musicians to be able to get a better return when someone buys their music. You can listen to all music, and then choose to buy it if you want.

CF & Stan's EP - https://skyscraperstan.bandcamp.com/album/tall-stories-ep - is a "name your price you are willing to pay". Others might have a minimum price - and it does feel good to pay more for an album, knowing (or assuming) that the extra money goes directly to the artist/s, and that Apple/iTunes/etc get stuff all.

Went to an actual record shop and found out his catalogue isn't available in the UK.

I am generally not too slack when it comes to voting, just the selecting of songs. I voted last year.

Wasn't that sure which was yours this time, but I'd guess Warren Zevon.
Can't say - yet.

You've often picked mine though.

I wouldn't expect that many shops in Aus would have them either, Arthur. Very much a struggling, hard working act. I happened upon one unheard-of Melbourne band who put me onto another who put me onto this mob. I saw Stan and his cousin (the guitarist in the CF) in Launceston one night and I was they only person there for the music, and there would have been a grand total of 20 people there throughout their few sets. A real pity.

You should be able to order the discs through Bandcamp?
