1987.

England lost the final Test of an Ashes series they had already won.
England lost a home five Test series 1-0 v Pakistan.
England lost an infamous three Test series in Pakistan 1-0.

So won zero games from Jan-Dec. Lost 3.

1997.

England lost the Ashes at home 3-2, one draw.
England won 2-0 in NZ, one draw.

Won 4-3 Jan to Dec.

On those numbers it's 97 by a distance.

I'm more likely going on my view of the players' overall records, rather than what happened in the actual year in question :d'oh:

And fair enough Prof is picking out a team that actually played together in a game, but Ramps and Martin actually only played in that game that year, and were two of the weaker players, and Hollioake only played one other. Goughie was the top wicket taker that year, and Headley was around. Crawley was more representative of that year than Ramps.

maybe a better idea is to average out the team of the year.

Not saying that. Pref's game=prof's rules. Just looking at some context as is my traditional right under ancient internet law.

Only reason I did that was that it would be a bit time consuming,

But selfish of me.
