The Ashes 2017-18 Fantasy League.

Postby Arthur Crabtree » Tue Nov 14, 2017 9:03 pm

The Ashes are nearly upon us and it's time for the pre-series traditions to begin. The baiting of Stuart Broad. David Warner to exclusively reveal to the Brisbane Advertiser that he hates Poms worse than Ned Kelly did. A thousand self employed England fans to touch down at the home of slip-slap-slop with absolutely zero sun tan cream having got nowhere near Boony's record 52 cans on the flight. And the oldest Ashes tradition of all, the CMS Fantasy League.

This thread will be anticipating the Fantasy League with a look at the players likely to take part in this grand, historic contest, the key head to head (angry) face offs and who is likely to get suspended or get away with murder. But first, the legal stuff.

Feel free to pick 5 players from the two countries (a mix of the two, or 5 from one country - it's up to you), and two reserve players just incase one of the chosen 5 does not play. The first reserve player picked will come into contention first.

Scoring

Batting

1 point per run.
+10 for a score of 50.
+10 for every further increment of 50 scored.
If a batsman is not out after 50 = +10, after 100 = +15, after 200 = +25 etc....

Fielding

10 points per catch or stumping
20 points per run out, or 10 points each, if two players share the responsibility
10 bonus points for 3 contributions with catches, stumpings or run outs

Bowling

20 points per wicket
2 points per maiden over
+10 for 5 wickets in the match
+20 for 5 wickets in an innings
+30 for 10 wickets in the match
+50 for 10 wickets in an innings
+30 for a hat trick[/i]

The Ashes begin as tradition dictates, at The Gabba, and the first day is on the 23rd November. The commemorative coin will be tossed into a blue Queensland sky at 09.30. That's 23.30 GMT. Please have your sides ready and posted by then.

Australia will win the toss and bat.

And then it will rain torrentially for the rest of the day.

Teams can be entered from now.
I always say that everybody's right.

Here is what a well known bookie (British I think) sees as the most likely top run scorer in order of shortest to longest odds.

Warner
Smith
Root
Cook
Khawaja
Renshaw
Handscom
Bairstow
Stoneman
Ballance
Malan
Vince
Maxwell
Cartwright
Moeen
Foakes
Woakes
Wade
Starc.

Surely it is an indicator of the Aussie batter-keeper crisis that they think Woakes of England is more likely to finish top scorer than Matt Wade.

And this is their list of likely top wicket takers.

Starc
Hazlewood
Anderson
Cummins
Broad
Lyon
Woakes
Moeen
Overton
Crane
Curran
Cartwright
Maxwell
Ball

Obviously they don't see Ben Stokes figuring in the series.

Here is my team (subject to injury, withdrawal, judicial review, etc):

Root
Bairstow
Smith
Hazlewood
Warner

Khawaja
Woakes

Interesting rumours pertaining to the Aussie squad. But the squad not confirmed yet.

Whereas picking Anderson and Broad and Starc and Cummins is the FL equivalent of living in a state of relentless anxiety above the San Andreas fault as injury could any day suck a key pace bowler into a crack in the earth's surface, suspensions are more difficult to anticipate. While England captains have diplomatic immunity from over rate bans, Jimmy the Saint, in Gentle Ben's absence, must be the nearest to a dead cert for a red or yellow card based on onfield behaviour, with perhaps a penalty long overdue. But England could easily equal this up by sending batters out in fake beards and wait for Wee Davie's red mist to take over. It's uncertain if he has much of a punch in him, but often with infringements to the spirit of the game, it's the thought that count.

With no Braddin v Anderson on the card this year, we'll have to look elsewhere for a head to head that might bubble over. How about the captains? Joe Root's ingenuous schoolboy act could easily tip Steve Smith into the sort of finger wagging irritability that never seems too far away from settling on the sloping shoulders of the Sydney born malcontent.

Of course, if Snarlin' George gets a call up, he immediately becomes favourite for a ban brought on by undesirable conduct.

Rumours that Renshaw is about to be dropped for Bancroft, Wade to make way for Paine, and a surprise recall for Shaun 'how the hell is he still around the Australian squad?' Marsh.
