Arthur was so excited by this fantasy league that he delayed his holiday until after he'd got his team in

and he pulled out the Bailey/Bird big guns, so he is clearly in no mood to mess about with spoons or sweeties.... he's aiming to go all the way

'go hard or go home' is his new motto, it would appear

I'm still finalising my team, but I won't consider it impolite if nobody waits for me

unlikely... I haven't won one of these for a thousand years.

Aussie one is always hard to call because of the small player pool, which can be hugely affected by the central contract players. they dip in and out of the shield willy nilly, disrupting completely how often the non international players actually play, and because there is only a third of the number of teams to be found in the county championship, it has a much greater impact on FL team selections.

best example of that was Ed Cowan last year, who finished the previous season as easily the biggest run scorer, but then missed a third of last year's shield because Aussie had no matches and selection for NSW was based on Australia, who wanted to get some some practice for their big guns (to be expected), but who also wanted to get a look at some fringe players that they had their eye on.

The danger for me is that Trent Copeland falls into the same category, because he is in the same squad as the entire first choice Australia bowling attack. If Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins all happen to be fit...... who gets picked? The saving grace is that those 3 are rarely all fit at the same time.

The trick in the Shield FL is to find 11 players who are both unlikely to be called up by Australia, but also secure enough in their state sides not to be forced to make way to give CA contracted players some practice

and, of course, this task has become harder because Australia have so many banned players that they now have no idea who their natural replacements should be, and so shuffle the pack from one international series to the next
