A victim of his top order firing. in the last 3 routs he didn't really have to dust his bat off, while his lieutenants filled their boots

I have also wondered about a win bonus, but that might be stretching things a bit far.... maybe a POM bonus, but that would hinder me because I mostly pick bowlers and they hardly ever get POM. If they did these things back then, I could easily see Laker taking 19 wickets in the match and POM going to David Shepherd for scoring 113

PoTM is often a bit of a nonsense anyway . Sometimes one player is a standout ; sometimes they have to scrape one up out of a number of nondescript performances ; sometimes more than one deserve the "honour".

A certain Test Match in 1981 : without Botham's wonderful innings , Bob Willis wouldn't have even had an opportunity to bowl in the second innings...but if Bob hadn't nearly singlehandedly demolished the Australian line-up , his innings would have gone down in history as a gallant but fruitless effort against an overwhelming tide...

It really is a team game.
