SLC Twenty-20 Tournament

Postby The Professor » Sat Feb 16, 2019 8:22 pm

A T20 tournament played over a relatively short period of time that features a relatively high number of ex-internationals.

Adeesha Thilanchana stood out today with 3-22 as Moors beat Sinhalese by 8 runs on DLS.

Thilanchana was mentioned as a potential Minor Leagues player for England last year and performances like this will do nothing to hurt his reputation.

Moors have won both of their games in Group A whereas this is Sinhalese's first loss.

The wonderfully named Nondescripts got a thrilling 1 run victory over Colombo. The home side were set a target of 142 - but fell just short of the target. The pick of the bowlers was ex-SLU19 player Saranga Rajaguru who got 3-24.

It was not the only tight call in the tournament as it took a Super Over to see Sinhalese to overcome the Saracens.

The final is on Wednesday.

What with the cancellation of the PSL, I thought I would need another hobbyhorse to amuse me.

This one much more sprawling in nature.

My eye was caught by the game between Kurunegala and Chilaw. After putting on 151-8, Kurunegala bowler Nimasara Atharagalla, playing in just his 4th T20 game, got figures of 4-26. Chilaw were all out in 9.2 for 135.

Perhaps my eye should have been drawn to Nugegoda vs Chilaw Marians as the former performed well with both bat and ball. Muditha Lakshan got 73 and Pramud Hettiwatte got 4-13 to top the batting and bowling rankings respectively.

All games in this round of games were DLS-ed due to weather but one name that stuck out to me (in more ways than one) was Thaveesha Kahaduwaarachchi. The ex-Sri Lankan under-19 was making his senior T20 debut for Saracens and top scored with a 40 ball 46 helping put his side ahead of the eight ball against Tamil Union who did not reach the DLS adjusted total of 91 in 14 overs.

Lankan's Harsha Cooray has had a good start to the tournament with scores of 59 and 65 and is 21 runs clear at the top of the run scoring tally. Kurunegala's 5 wickets today puts him atop the list of wicket takers.

The Nondescripts Cricket Club looked anything but unassuming as they got Lankan out for just 48 runs today. Chasing 169, Lankan were dismissed after just 13.1 overs. Wickets were shared around but Chamika Gunasekara's 3-5 from 3 overs was the most impressive. The relatively unknown bowlers has got 7 wickets in the last three games. It was the third win in a row for the Nondescripts who top their table, with Lankan with one win from 3 in 4th out of 6.

Minod Bhanuka got 85 got Colombo against Negombo to overtake Harsha Cooray on the run scoring table. He now has 148 from three innings. There are four players all tied with 8 wickets however Binura Fernando average of 5.12 puts the Ragama man at the top of that table.

Galle pulled off a surprise victory against Kandy today as they ended their run of three loses against the mid-table team. Ex Barnoldswick player Chalana de Silva took four wickets for the loss of 23 runs helped Galle defend their decent total of 145-7. Kandy ended up bitter as they were all out with 24 runs needed in the final over.

In terms of overall success, no batsmen have blown the competition away. Nugegoda's Pramud Hettiwatte tops the run scoring table with 205 from 5 games. Ragama's Ishan Jayaratne is the highest wicket-taker with 15.

Panadura recorded an expected win over bottom placed Sebastianites today. It was a day for the bowlers as two from each side got 3+ wickets - however Charith Jayampath ended up with the best figures of 4-26 as Sebastianites ended a mere 8 runs short of overhauling Panadura's 122.

Kandy's ineptitude continued as they failed to take advantage of a very low DLS score of 70 in 9 overs. They instead managed to lose 8 wickets and only get to 54 and hand Negombo the win. Roshen Fernando got 3 batsmen out for 5 runs but then ended up with figures of 3-13. Negombo are now second in the table behind Colombo.

Nugegoda's Muditha Lakshan 60* take him to the top of the run scoring table with 247 in 6 matches. Ishan Jayaratne is still the highest wicket-taker.
