Dhaka Premier Division Twenty20 Cricket League

Start of this tournament passed me by.

Always a decent one that has been taken up a notch by the BCB heavily suggesting that it will be the main pool for how they select players for the World Cup. Accordingly all the star names are turning out.

Abahani are one of the most star studded names and they saw off Old DOHS today to make it two wins in two. Abahani's runs were shared down the order as they got to 135-6 whilst DOHS had to rely on Rakin Ahmed who got almost a third of their runs in his score of 43.

If the selectors are true to their word, Tasamul Haque must be putting his name in the frame. A veteran of Bangladesh Under-19s and Bangladesh A he top scores in the tournament with scores of 65 and 59 for PSC. Nayeem Hasan has made his Test bow for Bangladesh but may well be forcing his agenda for the shorter form with his table topping haul of 5 wickets for Prime Bank.

Been really enjoying this competition first thing of a morning.
It has hit the headlines rather over the weekend after Shakib Al Hasan was given a three week ban for catastrophically losing his temper on three separate occasions in a match – however there is much more to the comp than that.

Prime Bank won today and top the table with 7 wins and 2 losses but there are three other teams who are within a win of taking top spot.

As was said above, the BCB said they wanted to use this competition as their main decision making process for the World Cup. One name that would have been in the frame anyway was Mahmudul Hasan Joy but he has asserted himself with 314 runs across 9 games for Old DOHS. One sticky situation is that he is struggling to convert individual success with helping his team win games. They languish third from bottom with just two wins. His 85* off 55 balls (3x4, 7x6) against Gazi Group is the second highest score of the tournament thus far. At 20 years of age MHJ is really impressing.

It is another unfashionable team who provide the highest wicket taker. ShinePukur’s Tanvir Islam has 19 wickets – three more than anyone else. This is a trickier one for the BCB as Tanvir has not represented Bangladesh at any age category so would be a fresh face to the set up. However they did create that rod for their back so….

Controversy has struck this competition once again as Sabbir Rahman has been accused of racially abusing and throwing stones at an opposition player in their match against Partex. It takes away from a Mohammad Shahid inspired victory to get their first victory in three.

Mehid Hasan Joy and Tanvir Islam retain the highest runs and most wickets respectively.

Both Abahani and Prime Bank won today to keep them tied at the top of the table as we go into the last round of fixture.

Mohammas Saifuiddin's three-fer saw a rain effected game swing back Abahani's way after Prime Bank had already won their game this morning.

At the other end of the table Partex and Old DOHS are relegated.

Mizanur Rahman has played his last game of the competition and ends up on 418 runs. The top three highest run scorers all found themselves in the relegation league. The nearest player still active is 64 runs behind Mizanur.

Prime Doleshwar's Kamrul Islam Rabbi is the highest wicket taker with 22.

Unbelievable scenes in the Dhaka Premier League as joint table toppers Abahani and Prime Bank managed to lose today setting up a straight out winner takes all fixture between the pair on Saturday morning.

Prime Doleshwar got the better of Bank today thanks to a discipline bowling performance; something they have lacked throughout the tournament. The star of the show was Shafiul Islam who nabbed 4 wickets for 36 runs and helped limit Bank to just 126. A total they chased with ease.

In the other game Gazi Group overcame Mohammaden by 3 wickets with 3 balls remaining. Mahedi Hasan continued his fine form with a score of 92 which made up a large part of Gazi's total of 166. Unbelievably Mahedi has been dropped for the forthcoming series against Zimbabwe.
