poor old Joe

after weeks of sitting around twiddling his thumbs and seemingly surplus to requirements, he gets his name on the team sheet and then has to sit around twiddling his thumbs waiting in vain to run out to the middle. I'll bet he was desperate for one of the two batters knocking off the runs with ease to get out. That might have been his only chance to earn his corn in this IPL

this latest match started at 3pm and 75 mins later they'd completed 14 overs :o

even the England team can't compete with that and they take the ssip endlessly with their bowling rates

when I think how, in the early days of T20, teams had to have started the 20th over by 75 mins or face a 6 run penalty, it shows how far T20 has come on.... or gone off..... or lost the plot..... and nuggets with sh1t for brains are coming up with shorter concepts because 4 hours is too long for a T20 match. Yet the answer was there right from the very beginning.... day 1

the match has been going now for 3 hours and 40 mins and there are still 5 overs to bowl. Any reasonable T20 match would have finished 40 mins ago

I shall have to check the Blast times, to see how a match lasts in Blighty, the land of the missing 20 balls

Fortunately Lucknow have helped the situation by leaving out de Kock and then subsiding to a pathetic run chase, so the match won't break the 4 hour barrier

although with 83 runs required off 4 overs and with only the last two bowlers standing, they've decided to spin it out by calling a strategic advertising break, so maybe the 4 hour barrier for a partial game is still on

those coffers won't fill themselves

I wonder how much trouble they'd be in if they were all out the ball before an ad break?

the Blast match that went all the way with 18 wickets, 16 sixes and 34 fours lasted 2 hours 45 mins

that would be barely halfway through in the IPL

I always think that Chennai Super Kings sounds like a cigarette brand rather than a cricket team.

There's a lot of royalty based motifs for teams in the IPL - as well as Chennai, there's Royals (Rajasthan), Kings (Punjab), and Royal Challengers (Bangalore). I assume that imagery plays well to an Indian crowd (despite being a democracy :hmmm ). I know there are a lot of hereditary Maharajahs still around in some places like Rajasthan (it does mean 'land of kings', after all...).

While the Australian T20 teams tend to have an elemental/weather motif going - Thunder, Heat, Scorchers, Hurricanes. Can't imagine why that is ;)

Gujarat are 183/1 in 16 overs. Mumbai batsmen have been good at chasing , but even Rohit will need to score for Mumbai to chase another 200+ score this season.

Sai Sudarshan retired out as he just couldn't score at a good strike rate.

one of those ethical questions. I remember reading some time ago that this was likely to start becoming an issue. I think it started with Notts last year. Somebody had thought about the rules and come with a way to use them. Might have involved Samit..... can't remember exactly

As a fan i don't mind that he got retired. I would go further and say he should have been retired out few overs earlier given the way he approached his innings. There are some things that are are concern area with Indian cricketers and i am glad that atleast some effort is made by some think tank to notice and acknowledge the problem and resolve it.

N Jagadeesan (KKR player) is another batsman who too hasn't showed match situation awareness. Some day he will also be retired if he continues to play the way he has done recently.
