Good. Sterling, Chamberlain, Barkley, Wilshere, Jones, and no doubt others. Is Shaw really injured? Southgate and the FA should at the very least have called them up. Every single one of them. If they turned round and rejected the call, then fine - no doubt the media would then do some good for once, and hang those players out to dry.

Yet again we have missed a glorious chance to help the senior team. Fast forward five years, and you'll be able to count on one hand how many of these U21s have played ten games for the senior team. In which case what on earth is the point of them playing?

These are no longer U21 players, they are in the full team and have full playing careers. You cant expect 20 year olds to be playing in every match available, you have to limit their games. Wilshere for instance is always injured, Sterling had to be rested in the Premier League year....

Well then just scrap U21 football.

Last time I checked, the likes of Kane, Ings and Jenkinson had pretty full on PL seasons. But they don't play for a Liverpool or a Utd.

I don't remember their (ie Sterling etc) game time being limited by letting them miss a totally pointless friendly against Ireland just the other week.

Forget all those guys who weren't there, Gareth Southgate doesn't strike me as the type of guy who can motivate players who would rather be lying pissed in the middle of the road in some holiday resort.

I dont see why players in full international teams should be asked to step down to the U21's. I dont see why those that dont want to should be vilified in the press. I dont see what benefit it has for a player to play all summer at a World Cup, and then be asked the following summer to play in an U21 tournament, then the Euros next year (as Sterling's case maybe )

At 21, he wouldnt of had a break in several years. If you want to kill your young players then fine, send them to everywhere and have them play 12 months a year..... they wont improve.

Ings and Jenkinson are unlikely to go to any other tournaments, and didnt go to the world cup. They didnt play champions league matches last year either. Harry Kane is 21 and never played a full football season before. These are guys that dont have the work load of others.

I believe Jack Wilshere is the oldest eligible player for this particular tournament, as to qualify you had to be born in or after 1992, and he was born on New Years Day 1992!

I've just seen a picture on Facebook that Wilshere has posted, with a caption saying 'miss Football'

Was he asked to play?

I don't think he was, I think Southgate wanted to stay with the players that got them qualification. Good move!

Fair enough, even though it looks like these players and/or manager weren't quite good enough.

Apart from Harry Kane I wasn't too familiar with many of the rest of the players. What I saw, they didn't looked anywhere near good enough.

Its typical of English football fans to spell doom and the end of the world rubbish.... this was an U21 tournament with B team players, it doesnt mean anything. It does make me laugh though when people then start the blame game... Lawro saying its because they earn too much money, and all ranting on about this and that.

Germany's 2009 team that crushed this tournament apart had a lad the same age as Sterling would have been at this time... player of the tournament, rated the hottest property in the world, hyped up. What did he do? Signed a 10 million a year EUR deal at the biggest club in the world, won the world cup at 25. All about the money, aint it Lawro? Well no its not, because 180k at 21 didnt destroy Ozil.

In fact, that Germany team was really highly rated at the time, but apart from Hummels, Neuer, Boeteng, Ozil and Kheidira, you would struggle to recognise most of that squad because they grew up to be nothing. Hummels was actually released by Bayern because he wasnt considered good enough that year. The others all had big move moves, high value contract moves, big wages.... hey Lawro, just to let you know, they all won the World Cup as well. Big money at young age ruins players.... if this is the result though, can we pay English players as much as possible?

Its essentially a lottery under 21. Was it Southgate who said that Andrew Taylor and Andy Johnson were going to be the foundation of an England squad in the future when at Middlesbrough? One's career fizzled out and he ended up being a medium fish in a relegation fighting team and noncing kids in his spare time, the other plays in League One next year.... its impossible to tell. That Germany team was immense, all highly rated, only 5 players in the 23 made it over the next 6 years, the others are fodder.

Lawrenson is a nonsense prattling git most of the time but I guess it is his job to come up with reasons why this England team qualified comfortably for this tournament, went in (once again) with high hopes of progressing, and then ultimately played really badly and flopped out at the group stage.

I don't know, I might be wrong, but young footballing stars from the continent seem to be much more grounded that the kids over here, and probably can deal with lucrative contracts at a younger age better than the guys over here. Just a thought.

I'd imagine being a 20 year old Footballer, who plays in the EPL and for our under 21's, will go to your head. Not saying this is the reason why we went out. That reason imo is, we're not that good at Football.

If that really is the case then its a blooming disgrace with the amount of money thats floating around the English game these days. I'm wondering whether its more of a case that we are good enough but the players due to past history don't think they are when they get on the biggest stage, and we haven't got the right people in place to instill the belief that they can compete at the top level.

England's recent participation in the 2011 and 2013 Under 20 World Cups were more representative rather than fielding the best possible squad. Most of those players don't even end up playing regular Premier League football, let alone go on to play for England at senior level.

Agree with the last point. We get knocked out a minor nothing kids tournament and the venomous reaction about them being paid too much, snide remarks about them getting drunk in Spain, not good enough, don't care enough.... it all comes out. These guys are talented, they entertain millions if not billions around the world. If their clubs generate the money, they should get paid to their talent level, if that is a lot of money then so what. If they, at 21 in their spare time, have too many drinks on holiday and are filmed lying on the floor being sick then so what. I am a relatively well educated, well brought up man, but I hasten to add that I don't know a single person I would call a friend who hasn't had "a bad night" and got too drunk, made a prat of themselves. I certainly have, many many times before. I cant judge a 21 year old on some fake superior notion that

They are human beings after all. I am sure if your company or its customers wanted you to sacrifice your holiday after a tough few months working non stop in a high pressure situation I wonder how many of us would. Probably none.... but hey, footballers are judged differently. They don't care about the country unless we whip them to death... they get paid loads after all, they have no right to complain.

This team beat the German team recently, cut them apart going forward. Put them in a tournament and they prepare themselves to be the one who misses a penalty, or prepare for the media to annihilate them when they are home. That's what makes me laugh about this "send the kids out, get them used to tournament football".... great idea, lets inflict the psychological torture on them as soon as possible so when they get to the real thing, they appropriately play like rabbits frozen in the headlights.

I mean, the seeds of negativity were sown when they hired a manager like Southgate to lead the team. Got Middlesbrough relegated after 11 straight years in the Prem, spent 20 million on Alves (arguably the worst signing in history by a long way) and who is most famous for passing the ball to the German keeper to knock us out of a major tournament!!

I can imagine the inspirational speech he would give......"don't worry lads, if you miss the penalty you will be hated everywhere you go for the rest of your life, but at least Pizza Hut will pay you 400 grand for an advert to take the piss".

The England setup needs a strong character at the top who is able to set and bring into line the press and public to taking measurable and positive goals from each tournament. Say in the Euro's, Roy needs to be the one to say "we are going to try to win it, but realistically being competitive and getting to the knockouts where we at least play well... that's a positive". Then the team are murdered for not winning, and the next team think "ah well, we can play with some actual freedom here".

If I were in the team, I would be scared to touch the ball.
