The former would give them the greater chance of staying up this season, but probably a lesser chance of getting back up next season should they fail to stay up. And after all, just having a "greater chance" doesn't mean that it will actually happen.
I can't see Martin O'Neill wanting to leave Ireland (he's one of the leading favourites), but getting him on board until May could save Leicester from needing to make the above choice. Get him in as an interim manager until the end of the season. It would allow him to continue with Ireland, and allow Leicester to wait and see what is in store for them next season before making a permanent appointment.
