Spain may have lost 4-0 to Japan, but Japan only had 4 chances in the match and took them all. The lionesses had at least 4 great opportunities and took none of them, although they sure came close.

It was a decent enough game too, despite the result

What annoyed me was the lack of players in the box in the 2nd half. 2-3 good crosses were put in but nobody gambled or made an effort to get on the end of them. Hemp did but walsh (I think it was her) was stood in the middle on her heels. She could have easily got there.
That said, Spain were better and are well deserved world champs.

I thought Hemp had a pretty good game, in truth. She caused more problems for the Spain defence than anyone else, I think

Well, drat.

Agree with most of what has been said here. Spain were the better side and deserved the win. England just couldn't link up anything in midfield. Towards the end there were some iffy calls (plenty of play acting, IMO, should have been a second yellow for timewasting and Hemp's yellow was harsh), but it probably didn't make a difference overall.

Not sure how England looked so slick in the last game and so out of touch in this one, but Spain just controlled the game.

now that I've looked again..... you've got me wondering. She did move forward off the line, but it was a very late movement. I've rewound it a few times and she did move forward just before the player struck the ball. I confess that I don't know what constitutes an offence

Apparently it was VAR reviewed and ok - just. When the ball is kicked, the keeper needs to have at least one foot on, or in line with, the line. Earps had started moving, but her trailing foot was still in line with the goal line (only just), so it was ok.

Good lord, the BBC comments section remains a cess pool of misogyny. There seems to be a sizeable contingent out there that are appalled with the attention the women's world cup has been getting, think that women's sport is an abomination and England are terrible, and are glad they lost as maybe it will serve them right for hyping it up, or something :hmmm

If you're not interested in watching it, fine. Don't watch it. Lots of people want to (the viewing figures prove that), so it's appropriate for broadcasters and the papers to cover it. Why not just live and let live rather than go out of your way to be unpleasant about it?

I must admit, I've never understood the amount of effort some people put into complaining about something they profess not to be interested in or care about...

In line with? I didn't know that, cheers for clearing it up.

Echoes my own thoughts. I read a few of the comments before I gave up in disgust. What a miserable bunch of misogynistic sods inhabit those pages - completely blanking out any sensible discussion points... More trolls than you'd find under any bridge.

Though I guess even most comments there on men's football are more boring vitriol than constructive argument. Thank heavens for places like this site where one can have a reasonable and considered exchange of views on any sport - or even politics !

The Spanish FA president got himself in a right old mess. Planted a smacker right on the lips of Hermoso in the medal ceremony, which she said afterwards she neither liked nor appreciated. Then after that someone sent out a statement 'on her behalf' to say that actually it was all okay really. Meanwhile the papers pick up on the story and shine a big old spotlight on it, so he goes on the attack and calls everyone who thinks he's out of order an idiot or stupid. She is put under pressure to play everything down whilst the Spanish media starts a conversation about what workplace sexual aggression looks like and then he apologises and says that perhaps it wasn't really appropriate and acknowledges that maybe the president of the spanish FA should perhaps be a bit more careful over his actions

you think?

Pillock

I've never signed up to this modern tendency for everyone to give everyone else a hug, nor did I sign up to the fashion 30 years ago of everyone air kissing each other. Anyone tries to hug me, I take a pace backward and stick my right hand out. That's always the best way for men to greet, or congratulate anyone. If he'd shook the hand of each player instead of using the opportunity to hug and kiss a load of women, he could have avoided all of this.

I mention this only in reference to the misogyny that still exists in football

I quite like hugs, each to their own. But isn't that the entire point - each to their own. You don't touch someone if they don't want you to.

Rubiales is clearly a complete prat. The apology has been taken to task as being insincere, and now the Spanish PM has weighed in and disciplinary action is being considered. Good. Sounds like this isn't going to blow over quickly, and neither should it.

he's the guy who backed Vilda to the hilt when the players revolted. Vilda will be hoping that Rubiales can hang on, because (afaik) the players still can't stand either him or his methods, so if Rubiales goes, then the door might still be swinging when Vilda follows him out of it

Rubiales is going to resign tomorrow and FIFA have begun disciplinary proceedings. I can't see Vilda lasting long without him

except that he's changed hs mind and decided to fight this man hunt

presumably he's spent the night reading through the Trump playlist

Maybe Vilda begged him to fight it out

now 81 Spanish footballers (including some men, I believe) have refused to play for the national side until he has been removed from his post

the great pity is that the women's team have achieved something wonderful, something that should still be being celebrated nationally, and yet all the attention is on him.... which is probably what he's been wanting all along

w**ker!

close the door on your way out

His position is so obviously untenable that the cynic in me thinks he's holding out for some sort of payment to go away. Thats why hes concoted this obvious lie about consent, days later. If the Spanish FA tries to force him out , he will threaten a wrongful dismissal action and drag this and them through the courts and the mud for months, so they might well decide it's best to move on and offer him a settlement payout.

To$$er.
