FIFA World Cup knockout stages

The beautiful game!

The reaction of the ref, Cover, is interesting after the incident. The slowness of his realization of the extent of the injury has a mixture of guilt and corruption written all over it. If he were an inexperienced ref I would understand his stupidity. Curious to know what refs were being paid back then?

He claims today he was ball watching, but from his position on the field the two players are in his view. I reckon he was payed off by the Germans and will take the truth to his grave.

I think soon after he was voted the most hated man in France just ahead of Adolf Hitler.

I just read that.

Who know's, but it would have been very difficult not to see that.

To think we (England) beat France 3-1 in our opening game. It went downhill after that.

He knew exactly what he was doing. What he probably didn't realise was how severe he would hurt him. His backing away suggested he was panicking, probably followed by relief that he got away with it.

I was thinking about this game the other day. We just steamed them and the Czechs soon after. Nowadays we seem to be scared to play football like that.

That was the first world cup game I watched. Robson scored after about 20 seconds, or something like that. The second stage was a smaller group of three wasn't it. Weird format.

His comments afterwards were clearly not only disgraceful, but lies. He said that he would pay for Battistons crowns if that is all that's wrong with him. He claimed he thought the player was not injured badly, but he would have known on impact from the sounds alone that there was a serious problem. Not to mention the lack of writhing. The ref I'm sure thought at the time he could get away with his poor decision more in hope than anything. He probably figured if he ignored it the French player would simply get up and no one would be the wiser.

Second round was 3 team mini-groups. We were in with Spain & Germany. In the latter game we seemed obsessed whether or not the previously injured Karl-Heinze Rumenigge was playing. The Germans knew this and picked him even though he wasn't 100% (think he missed the next game). We got 2 0-0 draws and went out. Needed to goals v Spain to progress. Keegan & Brooking came on as subs in that game as they were injured previously. I think that was their only WC appearance.

That's right, all coming back to me now. Keegan missed a header late on.

First world cup I watched also, partly because before that in many parts of outback Australia we only had 2 channels and about 6 hours of TV a day. Yep that was an excellent England team, though I seem to remember they took for ever and a day to bring on Keegan and Brooking.

Yep I remember being pretty annoyed about how late they brought Keegan and Brooking and immediately they both had chances.

Two potential crackers today. I won't see much of the Germany - France one, but aim to see the Brazilian game. Bit worried Colombia have peaked already.
