Premiership 2015/2016

The beautiful game!

Pome or pommie is a strange one because it's an anacronym of 'prisoner of mother england' so how come Australians use it against us? Then again, perhaps they are saying that the English are in fact the prisoners stuck in this miserable over crowded country with poor weather, and they have escaped to the promised land!

Indeed, I have said that too. I never understood how the term could mean "prisoner of mother England" and be used for English people themselves, as surely it relates exclusively to Australians?

The only conclusion I get from it is that they are saying Australia has better weather, so we are the true prisoners stuck here.

Did Pommie not come from pomegranate, the colour the British were said to go when first exposed to the Australian sun?

You may well be right, and the prisoner of mother england' thing is possibly an urban myth or false etymology.

I have heard many reasons for where Pommie comes from. But my old man was from England, moved to Australia, and was called a pommie only when he got burnt after being out in the sun too long. So i guess i have always taken it to mean this.

I guess the question here is, is it derogatory? Do Australians use it to put us down or as a term of endearment? I know it is now considered as generally offensive and has been outlawed but it isn't something I really take offence to.

A lot of racist remarks are just plain old name calling. I'm thinking John Terry, and probably Vardy as well. Not nice but neither is being called a fat p...k

I don't think for one minute Terry and Vardy are racists, just acted like a couple of idiots, more so Vardy.

I think most of us are instinctively racist to a certain extent, it's that old base tribal mentality. It tends to come to the surface in arguments or when you've had too much ale. Most people understand and are educated to a level which has put that nonsensical hatred firmly to bed, and realise that it is not a nice way to treat your fellow man. May be Vardy grew up in a less than tolerant environment, because it was a very unpleasant way to behave.

Vardy's episode sounded very aggressive. Too much top deck?

Don't think he's the brightest spark. Probably hasn't got the vocabulary to have a sensible conversation with someone and resorts to abuse. I don't understand how over imbibing ale makes people so aggressive, I just go all mellow.

My old man never took offense to it though it did take a lot to offend him. The people that said it knew him so there was never an issue. He also used to give it back and everyone seemed to get on well with it.

In my place of work in Scotland a lot is said about my Australian up bringing and the fact i must be a convict and the like. Never bothered me, i usually raise the question of men wearing skirts and that tartan has really had its day and a few other things that involve small country syndrome. All fine though would only say this with people I know are fine with it. There are people in the village who it would upset so i don't say anything to them. Even when they call me a convict because you know it will just bring out the worse in them.

That's nice, call you a convict but can't accept any banter about themselves. Typical whiskey drinking kilt wearing chip on your shoulder small country attitude!

And I can say that as my grandfather was Scottish!

If Spurs win tonight, what are the chances that Leicester start to feel the pressure. They wont be with Vardy for the next game.

I just think Spurs will struggle the get the right result tonight.
