International Football thread

The beautiful game!

The most bizarre thing of this is Southgate is being paid 8 million on a 4 year deal.

Surely Southgate would have accepted £15 a week for that opportunity, on a match by match rolling contract? Why give a guy that no one wanted a huge wage and mega long deal, when all it means is you pay him £5mill of dead money when they sack him at the latest after Russia 2018? At the earliest, in 2017 when we fail to qualify?

that borders on heresy

of course they will give him a deal that means he gets to trouser a shedload of cash for failure... the people who appoint him will have similar deals in place.... after all they are not communists (Godfather)

threaten one person's ability to make big bucks for failure and you threaten them all.... the world as we know it would come crashing down.

I'd want big bucks for taking on that poison chalice, no matter what my credentials were.

Southgate hasn't much of a managerial career up til now, and certainly will have no managerial future when he is sacked in two years time. Got to set yourself and your family up for the fact that he is unlikely to work in football again, except maybe as a tv pundit, which he was pretty piss poor at and boring to boot.

8 million quid for all the media attention, national expectation and other crap that goes with that job is small potatoes. Haven't checked but he probably on a lot less than previous England managers in the recent past.

Defoe's back in the England squad. Obviously no Kane, and maybe Welbeck?

A couple of Liverpool.....sorry, Southampton players have earned a first call up.

Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn gets called up to the Welsh senior national squad and Jurgen Klopp is not best pleased with the lack of communication

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39308768

To be fair he has a point, what does calling a 17 year old to the senior national on the back of few first team appearances achieve? It's obvious Coleman and Wales want first dabs on Woodburn who qualifies for Welsh selection through heritage. Since the player is England born and learnt his trade at an English club, there should be restrictions on when a player is eligible for a secondary nation.
