Is Twitter the official communication channel for everything these days?

In a way Twitter brings the fans and the footballers closer together.

Jimmy Greaves once said that he would get the bus to the ground on a Saturday and it was packed with fans who would just have a friendly chat along the way.

Whether of course it's a good thing is open to debate.

There's a big difference between having a friendly face-to-face chat and using Twitter, Aidan. I think many are losing sight of that.

It's the 21st Century though DA. I use twitter but it isn't an obsession with me. I despair at seeing loads of young teenagers just wandering the streets while endlessly looking at their phones because they are tweeting or on facebook or whatever.

The mobile phone was a great invention but it could make zombies of the future generations.

I despair of that as well. A lot of people walk past our house in the morning and late afternoon - going to work, school etc., and loads of them are fiddling with little devices or listening to mp3 players. It may be the 21st century, but these things are causing people not to engage with each other, and that can't be good.

Doesn't this site do the same? I can be on here at night, completely ignoring my wife. That said, is it any different to reading a book?

I use my MP3 device a lot, but only when there is no one to interact with. i.e. on the way to work or university or whatnot.

Yes, I think it is different, DrR. Most evenings, if we're not watching TV, my wife will be reading a book and I'll be on here, playing chess online or something like that, but we're still together and we feel together.

What I see most mornings is one particular woman walking down the road, chatting away on her mobile, and her little child trailing along two or three paces behind her; they're not together.

I don't think two people have to be doing the same thing, talking to each other or doing nothing, to be 'together'; it's more a state of mind, I think.
