From the moment Austria equalised meaning England would get Portugal in the 16's, I knew with every fibre of my being that there would be no more goals in the 2 matches, and England would deserve the Ronaldo inspired dive in the box, the red card for Smalling, and Ronaldo slotting home for the 1-0 win that would send England packing in a tournament where the entire team had scored fewer goals than Gareth Bale................................

Imagine my surprise when Iceland scored a late winner.

It isn't, agreed. And it's just as unfair on those two second placers, when the other second placers all get to play each other.

But it is exactly the reason why I got tickets to this particular game, before the draw was even made in December. Given that it's in the Stade de France, it always jumped out a potential stand out tie of the last 16.

Some will say you have play good teams to win it, but a game against Spain will take it out of you.

alternatively.... if Italy weren't such smarty pants for winning the group with a match to play, they'd know exactly what they had to do to avoid Spain in the 16's

unlike the Austrians who built their whole tournament campaign around just beating Iceland in the final match. They didn't even try to beat Portugal, they were quite happy with the one point, knowing full well that 4 points would be good enough to qualify
