Henri Lansbury is a real quality player,
I never understood why he is in the Championship. By memory, he had a successful loan spell at Norwich when at Arsenal,
and he rejected them on a permanent basis because he considered them (still in the PL at the time) to be below his ambitions. He would be on the top of my "just been promoted, who can we buy" list if I was Burnley or Leicester.
You answered your own question in your post. his ego.
I don't know if he has an ego, but that wasn't the reason he turned down Norwich at the time. His loaning to Norwich was originally only supposed to be for a few matches, it was the year Norwich went up with Southampton so he was actually playing in the championship, but Arsene ended up saying he could stay all year.
By the end of the same season Arsenal had lost Ramsey to the leg break, Walcott had got a bad injury, and Wilshere missed the whole of the next season injured. With other long term concerns on Rosicky, Arsene had said that Lansbury would get a chance in the first team based on his Norwich performances the following season, due to a depleted squad.
Arsenal signed Arteta on deadline day that year, but before that Lansbury was down for getting football. I think Norwich launched a last minutes bid on deadline day to sign him, but he turned them down to go to West Ham on loan, as I guess he believed another year to sum his options up and maybe get a chance at Arsenal would be worth it.
In the end, I think he was good for West Ham but Forest ended up pulling the transfer out the bag.
