It won't be their fault, it never is. They'll have been provoked by the police, or someone infringing their historic right to do whatever they like.

We all knew there'd be trouble, this is Marseille, there's history. The French locals were always going to cause trouble and the same with the Russian fans. Don't condone the trouble caused by the England fans but a number of groups are responsible here not just the English, and it was always going to happen.

From what I saw on the news it looks like Russian fans went for us first.

Not that I'm saying we're totally blameless.

EURO 2016 - England v Russia Group B 11th June 2016

Postby st_brendy » Sat Jun 11, 2016 10:16 pm

Russian fans ran across to a section of England fans and started attacking them, apparently. Sat right next to each, with no stewarding or segregation keeping them apart. Sounds like there were minimal stewards and police around to help out, leaving those being attacked with no help. Various media reporting this on twitter.

Euro 2016

Much more of a concern is the scenes at the end. Norwegian media are reporting it appears Russian fans attacked English in the stadium, and that before Russia scored fireworks and flares (I heard one bang in the live feed) were being launched. Lets hope that the night passes peacefully, it seems one England fan had to have CPR to save his life today.

While I am sure English fans will be blameworthy in certain incidents in the city, I cannot accept that in a major tournament with security apparently the main concern, opposition fans were allowed to get close enough outside and INSIDE the ground to fight.

It also seems that French locals have got involved, in fact it seems suggested that the first incident was of a French local throwing a firework into an English dominated bar that was peaceful, and then the police tear gases the pub when people started to defend themselves.

Huge and searching questions need to be asked as to why England, who had history in Marseilles last time they went, were EVER allowed to be based there for a game for so long. Brainfart policing at its best.

For now though, lets hope no one gets seriously hurt as this could get very ugly spilling out in the streets.

Seems that the major incidents outside and inside the ground were caused by Russian fans, but no doubt most of the blame will be made to lie at the door of the English because of our history.

The French police seemed over keen on lobbing tear gas at the English fans too. Adrian Durham got caught up in it from his duties with Talk Sport on Friday.

Several hospitalisations of English fans reported this morning presumably from the melee when English fans were trying to escape in the ground last night after the loud explosion and Russian fans streaming into the English section.

As Sussex said, what bright spark thought it would be a good idea to have England v Russia in Marseille?!

The Russians were apparently armed to the teeth and set out to cause serious injury to the England fans. Back home the Russian press have claimed the Russian fan won, what a *modded* dangerous nation they are.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Before we descend into searching questions about Russian culture and hooliganism, the pictures and reports (from English people) dont lie; English fans over the last three nights have behaved appallingly in Marseille, and also have to take a lot of blame for what is happening. My comments from last night were about the incidents inside the stadium, but in the streets it seems no side can claim any moral high grounds, as all have acted disgustingly. Racist songs about winning wars for France, and "ten German bombers" in a country that has yet to get over the mental damage of recent terrorist attacks, I cant even begin to say how poor this behavious it. Throwing bottles at police, drunken songs...... In one piece of footage I seen on the news this morning, a group of about 10-15 England fans attack a cafe where Russian fans are drinking, throwing metal tables and chairs.... these were Russians, wearing team colours and drinking coffee with their wives, enjoying the sunshine. Not bear chested hooligans chanting back and ready for a fight.

As for the stadium, the Russian media are quite clearly downplaying the level and extent of violence, but I have not seen any comments about them "winning" and certainly no comments that try's to suggest it was initiated by anyone but the Russian fans. In fact, flicking through the state media there, they have posted all the videos that show Russian fans coming into the England end. The only media outlet I have seen not blaming the Russians, is the French. Who last night had a reporter in front of the England fans who were desperately running away who had the nerve to suggest that in someway this was there fault. The Russians themselves clearly accept blame for their fans. When discussions turn to the street, its much more open, but its clear the Russians and the English are to blame there.

As for 2018, its worth noting that when 1996 was announced those at UEFA were more than a little concerned about fan problems. Leonart Johannson, the UEFA president from Sweden, famously said on England being awarded the tournament that he was concerned about England hosting the tournament. At that stage, 90 plus people had died in an English stadium just before, and England fans had been involved in the Brussels/Heysel incident in a similar but much worse result to actions last night.

Russian football has a problem with Ultras, but England had problems with this too.
