Scottish football

Surely for something to be revitalised, surely it has to have been 'vitalised' some time in the past and then deteriorated. Ever since I have watched football from the late 1960s, Scottish football has been a joke, with only 2 teams ever competing, with an occasional rare foray from a club outside Glasgow into the top 2 positions. Why is Scottish football even mentioned on the news in England, because it really is irrelevant to anyone who is not Scottish? In the past, the matches were used to make up the numbers on the football pools, but with the demise of the pools, this is pretty much irrelevant now. Nobody mentions Welsh or Irish football in the national media, and Scottish football is only a little above either of these.

Apart from Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen, I don't think I can remember anyone else apart from Rangers & Celtic wnning the SPL. There is always talk of them joining the EPL which of course is laughable and has no merit whatsoever. Most of the best Scottish players used to play in the old English first division anyway although this has declined massively to the extent there are only a handful of players in the EPL.

The third & fourth tier of the Scottish leagues seem to be a complete waste of time. Most of those games are only watched by 10 men and a dog. The standard of play seems to be no better than an average pub team.

Maybe sharing the television revenue evenly rather than the Old Firm getting most of it would make the SPL more competitive.

Scottish football could prosper if it's played during the summer. Improved attendances as fans won't be watching games in freezing temperatures and training pitches become out of action less often.

Living up here and outside of Aberdeen, i notice most football supporters follow teams in England. And that when Rangers or Celtic are on at the pub, less turn up to watch than when the big clubs from England play.

I have had the displeasure of going to some Aberdeen games. And i came away with a neck injury. The ground itself is not ideally located, being close to the sea, but the day's were wet, and they were still watering the pitch. The pitch was chopped up, and there just seems no desire to put the ball onto the ground and play with their feet. I guess if grounds are prepared for the long ball, then teams will play the long ball. Scotland needs to follow the lead of the Dutch, Sweedon and Denmark. All small countries who's players can all play football. If this happens then perhaps more people will go and watch?

Scottish football needs a lot more then a small expansion to revitalise it. It would be nice to see the SPL being quite competitive but as it stands only Rangers and Celtic stand any chance of winning it and that doesn't look like changing any time soon.

Well Motherwell are top of the league at present :laugh

The SPL is all about 2 teams, and it is dying. Starting this early, very few people where i am are not paying attention at all. The SPL needs a major overhaul, but none of the teams have any vision. Celtic and Rangers have killed football up here.

Malmo beat Rangers 1-0 overnight. Not looking good for the Scottish champions.

How can the SPL begin yet Celtic go off and play in the Dublin Super Cup and have a friendly with Swansea City?

Utter madness, i'd have made sure Celtic played a league game even if they had to field kids.

SPL boss on how Rangers exit from the CL will affect all SPL clubs. I found these paragraphs interesting
'Despite there being no Scottish team in the group stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2002-03, Doncaster defended the quality of the SPL.

"We've got players like David Goodwillie who has just gone to Blackburn for a multi-million pound sum," he said.

"And we've certainly got a very good representation of managers south of the border.'
Not sure many could agree with him, The likes of Ferguson and Moyes can support his claims that they have a decent representation of managers in the EPL, however aside from the likes of Goodwillie and Adam attracting decent interest from the higher clubs not many scottish players have made huge impacts outside the SPL in the past decade.
