I still keep thinking of Gretna and the lovely Brooks Mileson.

Rangers however are allowed to vote on their future in the SPL despite getting themselves into this mess. Even if Rangers are still playing in the SPL next year as a 'newco', no doubt they'll face heavy sanctions. After the dust has settled on this mess though top priority reforms are needed at all levels in the SFA to avoid such debacles again.

they dont have a vote afaik , its the other clubs only

agreed regarding the SFA tho , how a club can get themselves into this mess and how someone with whyte's background is allowed to buy a club in the first place is pretty damning of the SFA

absolute farce that a club of that stature has allowed itself to get into this situation

craig whyte is being painted as the main villain and he looks like hes a bit of a dodgy character but most of the tax debt was accrued under the previous ownership trying to pull a fast one

Reading between the lines of whats being said in meeting with non Old Firm clubs, they might have some ideas up their sleeves and be happy to not allow Rangers back in the SPL.

One SPL chairman mentioned that the sectarian side of the Old Firm hinders new revenue coming into Scottish Football, another former chairman mentions clubs would be £375,000 worse off without Rangers and most clubs are capable of absorbing those losses.

If Rangers don't get back in the SPL, non old firm clubs are potentially subject to takeover bids from investors. At the moment money can't be made within Scottish Football but it's there playing Europa/Champions League. 4 European places are up for grabs in a SPL League of 12 and non old firm clubs can be bought on the cheap. For example someone could invest in Motherwell, give Stuart McCall funds to qualify for Europa League group stages and instantly reap the rewards.

In turn SPL has more than 2 teams challenging for the title, stadium attendances increase, TV and sponsorship deals increase in value, more central funding for all SPL sides, Scotland has a stronger UEFA co-efficient rating.

It appears half of the SPL clubs have already decided to vote against a newly formed Rangers to compete in the SPL

I can't see mass investment coming into the SPL, IMO teams would have to run Celtic close to the title for investment to come ( or atleast the appropriate investment to make the league relevant ) I dont see finishing 2nd but 25 points of top as an incentive.

But I do agree Rangers need to be punished, although only the fans and stadium workers are really going to suffer, i.e the people that have done nothing wrong.

If Rangers have to start again in Div 3 there could be some record scores and attendances there next season.

I believe the way the ownership of the club is changing that the players contracts become null and void, I doubt any of them would be willing to play in the 3rd division.

Queens Park will be on a right money spinner in hosting Rangers twice at Hampden Park.

If Celtic have any players themselves. Rumours already that some Celtic players noe want to jump ship. Clearly even they have some standards, competition-wise. It's one thing choosing to play somewhere where you've got a 50% chance of success, it's another choosing to play somewhere where you've got a 100% chance of success. And it's not like Celtic can offer stupid Russian/Middle-Eastern money.

Squad wise I don't think Celtic are as strong as they were in previous years, every chance of a non Old Firm side winning the SPL or at least more than a 2 horse race.

Paddy Power offering odds on The Field to win the SPL at 10/1, worth a cheeky few quid.

the theory has always been that if other clubs are competing for the title that they would see big increases in attendances and that the old firm dominance was bad for the game, next year might show how true that theory was

it is a few years ago but when i followed my home town team, dunfermline, went to every match, home and away for about 5 years in my late teens-early 20s, the team yo-yo'd a bit between the SPL and the first division. in the years we were in the first division challenging for the title and/or promotion we actually got better sustained attendance than the years in the SPL fighting relegation, apart from the matches against the old firm obviously.

I had a feeling this might happen -

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18721497

The way things are going it could all end up in the law courts and the Scottish football season could be put back a while.
