Club or country?

The beautiful game!

Club or country?

Postby mikesiva » Wed Nov 03, 2010 8:19 pm

If you had the power to choose, would you choose your club to win the Champions League, or your country to win the World Cup?

Personally, I'm more a fan of Manchester United, than I am of national football in either England or the Caribbean, so I would go for the club. Why? Because players like Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale are class acts, but they will never play in a World Cup, because Wales will never reach there. But the CL gives them the opportunity to play on the world stage....

But if you ask me to choose between Man Utd winning the CHampions League, and the West Indies winning the cricket World Cup, well then....

Club for me at cricket and football every time. Clubs are the one I watch, know about and get involved in. National teams are collections of players I dont really care about - and often dislike at club level. For example, I find John Terry pretty odious. A white shirt with three lions on it doesnt mask the smell for me.

With cricket I hope the Warwickshire lads do well but England winning isnt that important to me - I just want to see good cricket.

Since cricket is the only sport I follow that has such a distinction I will say country. Not really too interested in the NZ domestic game except in terms of how it impacts on the national side.

We are talking about football so I would like to see England win the WC again (Hartlepool United will never win the CL).

Cricket - I'm a club man first and was ecstatic when Durham first won the CC.

If Bradford City ever won the Champions League, it would be an everlasting boost to the City of Bradford.

Yorkshire to win the Twenty20 Champions League or England to win the ICC World Cup next year? Tough decision, but England winning the ICC World Cup shades it. Yorkshire playing and beating the big guns would be amazing, but Twenty20 is not proper cricket.

Club but yes, West Indies winning anything of note (a test match maybe ? :) ) would trump the lot.

Easiest decision in the world.

Club over country every time.

Southampton and Hampshire will always come before England in my eyes.

If I were given the choice of England winning the World Cup in 2010, or Southampton winning League One in 2010, I'd have taken League One every time. And whilst I obviously cannot be certain, I'm pretty sure that the jubilation I would have got from watching Gerrard hold the World Cup aloft, would not have matched that which I really did get at Wembley back in March when I saw Saints win the JPT.

And for certain, whilst I was very pleased to see England win the Twenty20 World Cup this year, it came absoloutely nowhere near to what I felt when Hampshire won the FP Twenty20.

Club for me In football every time. The season is far more interesting to me with far more memorable matches. I never know who to support at the World cup any way. In truth I can't remember an enjoyable world cup. Maybe the final between Frances and Brazil, and when Roger Millar burst onto the scene for Cameron. Gazzas days were fun also, I don't think it ever lives up to the hype. Too many nerves, too many sub standard refs, too many sub standard players whom haven't played with each other very much.
I'm sure the Spanish fans would disagree with me right now, but the world cup is all about the result and the glory. A season of football, well it lasts all season and win or lose you're always in the battle even if it's just to avoid relegation.

sums up what I was going to say, almost word for word.

if you gave me the choice between Southampton beating Peterborough on Saturday or England winning Euro 2012...I would pick Saints every time

Well I guess I am not much of a club supporter hence my inclination towards the National side.

The other problem with the world cup is that most players are spent by the end of the season. They are usually carrying injuries hich end up getting worse and probably shouldn't even be playing.
