Geoff Hurst has re-opened the debate:

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/09022011/ ... gland.html

'Talking to the Telegraph's Henry Winter, he was poetic about the rewards 1966 and all that had brought him. He relished the lifetime of acclamation that followed his achievement. And he felt that today's players are missing out because of the rapid devaluation of the international game. "There cannot be anything better than playing for England, whether in darts, dominoes, cycling or football," the great man insisted. "But it is becoming more evident that players don't feel that way."'

Apparently, Sky Sports News conducted a poll which showed that 76% of footy fans chose club over country, though I can't find it anywhere on the internet....

Personally, I'm more a fan of Manchester United, than I am of national football in either England or the Caribbean, so I would go for the club. Why? Because players like Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale are class acts, but they will never play in a World Cup, because Wales will never reach there. But the CL gives them the opportunity to play on the world stage....

The way Hodgson has treated Rio, and the way the English media and England fans have over-reacted with such venom towards Rio have only further reinforced my feelings with regards to club vs country in football....

After all, clubs pay the salaries of these footballers, so that's their main job. They only play for their national team for the joy of doing so. If the club treats you like *modded*, you put up with it, because they pay your wages. But when your country administration treats you like *modded*, it's just not worth it...stick to your club, Rio! You'll be better appreciated there....

Absolutely nothing wrong with how Hodgson has treated Rio in my book. If Rio wants to reject his call-up, then also absolutely fine. But don't expect another call-up now Rio, and rightly so.

Best for all parties concerned if Rio never played for England again, no individual is bigger than their country.
"Stats are there to be broken" Dominic Cork
"They took all our players away, banned our captain and we still came away with a ten-wicket victory" Jason Gillespie
"You won't get anywhere slouching about half out of bed" Geoffrey Boycott
