It does, specially after the U 20 world cup win. Semi final loss on penalties and a world cup win by Englands youth teams is a pretty impressive return for the summer.

Had a feeling we'd lose the shootout.

I heard somewhere changes are being made to these shootouts. The name ABBA was mentioned as well.

I'm sure this was not a dream.

I think DFM was suggesting some of these guys will be taking penalties for the senior team one day!

But you are right, the English youngsters have done very well this summer, penalty shoot out loss or no penalty shoot out loss.

We done well in an u21 tourny not long ago, but have a pretty average team right now. I'm guessing we'll still be playing catch up in 10 years time, when it comes to the real thing.

Can't cope with the pressure that gets heaped on them as they get older. Same goes for alot of sports, we excell at youth level but fall short at senior.

Small margins in the 5th round of penalties, Pickford was unfortunate not to have got a hand to the German 5th penalty and Redmond would have gone to the penalty spot in a better frame of mind.

Small margins is what wins one off knockout competitions. Maybe English teams don't advance in high pressure knockout situations because finishing 17th or 4th in the Premier League is seen as a bigger achievement than winning the League or FA Cup.

I'd like to see the FA Cup winners get a Champions League place and those who finish 3rd to 6th in the Premier League have an end of season playoff to contest the remaining Champions League spot.

just watching the confederations cup game between chile and portugal thats gone to extra time and dont know if this is a change they are proposing for all football or if its just for this competition but i like the idea of teams being able to use a 4th sub if it goes the extra 30 minutes

Didn't Germany pretty much get rid of all their established players before the 2006 WC, told the public not to expect too much of the young squad that they were going to select, and then did really well in that WC.... or did I just make that up?

I guess that how well they develop depends entirely on the premier league clubs. If the bulk of those players get lost in the Man U, Man C squads (for example), or become utterly reliant on the service provided by overseas players, then some won't progress well at all. Perhaps they will develop faster by playing week in, week out, for PL teams below the level of the top 4 or 5, than by having bit roles in the big teams, but who also regularly play in european competitions.

Money talks, though I suppose. Nobody forces these young players to choose the big money over regular football

If you are only on a paltry £40k a week playing regular football, why wouldn't you instinctively go to a club that will double your wage, even if you do spend a lot more time sitting on the bench, hoping for a few minutes here, and a few minutes there

I've come to the conclusion that when footballers are looking for an indication of how good they are compared to someone else, they compare wages rather than achievements with the ball.
