I'm trying to get my head around the Sandro Tonali situation and what it means for Newcastle.

At first I thought reports that he could be facing a 3 year ban were scaremongering. Other players get months long bans rather than years long bans, but now it seems that he was betting on results in matches that he was playing in and that might make a difference. I can see a scenario where a long ban might be more in Newcastle's interests because a 3 year ban is clear, the player is unable to fulfill his contract in any meaningful way and presumably opens the door to dismissal on the grounds of gross misconduct. Newcastle would have to take a £55m hit, but have the resources to do so. A shorter ban, with say half of it suspended would make him unavailable for the rest of the season, but also make it harder for Newcastle to replace the player under the FFP rules in the short term, because Tonali's transfer fee is worth about £11m per season and earns over £7m a year and would still be on the books..... 18 million quid they can't now spend. That being said, from next season onwards and with the right support, Newcastle might have an excellent and extremely grateful young player with a long contract who is fully committed to the club and the project.... and he'll have a long period of reflection in which to learn the language ;)

The whole thing does make me wonder how much Milan knew about this before they 'reluctantly' decided to sell the player. There were also reports in the summer that the player was uncertain about the move and was persuaded to go by Milan. It also makes me question how diligently Newcastle's 'character' tests were followed when checking the player over before pursuing the bid. These personality tests are of paramount importance to Eddie Howe and this looks like a complete *modded* up from start to finish

Surely if these instances were happening while playing in Italy, there must be some possibility of the transfer being nullfied, as the crime had occurred before the transfer?

hell on in Turkey atm

I saw footage of the incident last night for the first time and I hadn't realised that once the ref had been punched to the floor, there were other individuals who immediately ran round to put the boot in as well (which is a depressing indictment of the human condition, because whenever someone commits an act of violence in a group of people there are always those who instinctively and immediately want to put the boot in, like a feral reflex action)

the gulity man apologised, resigned and declared that this might now be the catalyst to change the relationship between Turkish football and violence.... almost as if he was doing football a favour, the big daft pudding (if it was Trump he'd have said that he'd been blessed by a vision from god who told him to punch the ref in the face for the long term benefit of football), but it seems to me that this is not the action of a man who was uncharacteristically and inexplicably overwhelmed with the compulsion to lash out, this was more like the action of a man who routinely responds in this way and the only uncharactistic and inexplicable part was that he did it somewhere where everyone could see

I hope they throw the book at him and the others who immediately piled in

I'll hopefully be doing a refereeing course in February. Incidents like this and other I hear about at the grassroots level are putting me off. I may and will at first, referee kids games first.

My experience of UK grassroots football is extremely negative, so I would never bother with that. People take it way too seriously, and there is no respect in the game. I used to play for a team that was a laughing stock and yet we routinely ran into teams that would hack you to shreds or start fights if you dared to score a goal. I stuck to rugby instead...

I cannot compare to other countries but yes, adult 'Sunday morning' Football is notorious for yobs playing so they can start a fight as well as fans joining in. Kids Football is fine from what I have seen, although there have been incidents of parents and coaches being provocative.

Roma have sacked Mourinho

I've said before that the Newcastle owners seem to like him and my fear is that an out of work Mourinho makes him an even more tempting target if Newcastle continue to slide down the table.

Mourinho would be a disaster at Newcastle, imo

To me, its fairly obvious that the pressure of managing both Real and United at difficult times in the clubs histories, really destroyed Mourinho on a personal level. At Roma, he cut a depressive and permanently agitated presence, and would fly off the handle like an utter lunatic on a regular basis - of course, he always had a little of that in the mix, but it has been constant and very extreme in recent times. I truthfully wonder whether or not he has mental health issues, and would personally like to see him retire for his own good.

He got sent off 8 times at Roma for various crazy outbursts. He doesn't seem to love the game anymore. His tactics are from a now bygone era, and he doesn't seem like he has the heart or interest left to re-invent them. And his Roma team were horrendous to watch..... all diving, rolling around, elbows to faces type rubbish. Like a crap version of Diego Simeone's Atletico.

Newcastle would be mad to hire him

Dani Alves.... four and half years in prison for rape, plus 5 years probation after that

I get so used to rape allegations against footballers being turned over in court that, without following the case at all, I half expected a different result
