A man has been jailed after admitting to a racist attack on Manchester City's Raheem Sterling.

Karl Anderson plead guilty to racially aggravated common assault at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday and was sentenced to 16 weeks in custody.

The court heard how Anderson, 29, kicked and shouted racial abuse at Sterling outside the entrance of the City Football Academy ahead of City's win over Tottenham on Saturday evening.

I see that Bobbie Madley, the ref at the Liverpool v Everton match last night was made aware of a racist comment by Firmino towards Holgate.

Made aware?? He was stood two feet from Firmino when the comment was supposedly made, Holgate was further away. You could even see Holgate mouth to the ref did you hear that?

Clearly Firmino had good cause to be upset at being pushed into the crowd but South American players do have history of racist abuse.

Quite a lot of people on Twitter, whether or not you believe that, saying he called him a son of a b*tch in native language. Seems to be widely posted by Spanish/Portuguese speakers claiming Firmino seems to be mouthing this. Not defending Firmino, just saying no one has at all come up with anything Firmino said that was racist as yet, a lot of people saying he insulted him more generically. If he is found to have said something then the standard huge ban applies.

Would be weird if he did mind, I believe he is Pardo which has been a historically repressed and largely discriminated ethnic group in South America. Would be weird for him to say something racist with regards to his own upbringing.

That was one over the top reaction to being called a son of a *modded*. I'm guessing it was racial, though hope it's not.

If he has been as stupid as to have racially insulted Holgate, then with respect to what seems a spiralling thread of people thinking this behaviour is becoming acceptable in society, Id personally like the FA for once to make a stand on it that actually sends a clear message; this is not acceptable, and if you want to say things like that, then do it elsewhere, but not here, not on our pitches.

Id kick Liverpool out the FA cup and ban Firmino for the rest of the season.

It sounds like Firminho may not have said what Holgate accused him of saying.

Whether he did or not will need to be investigated and resolved, but in the meantime why is no action being taken against Holgate for a deliberate and nasty attempt to injure Firminho. That push sending Firminho flying over the advertising hoardings into the crowd was ridiculous and if I was the ref I would have sent him off

If he's played the race card to take the attention off his push on Firmino then Holgate deserves punishment.

Seems doubtful. If so, then Holgate is a good actor.

I agree with red, Holgate should have gone for that push.

which of them laid hands on the ref? (I confess to not knowing who either of the players are, or which one was shoved into the crowd, although I did see the incident)

Players should never be allowed to get away with grabbing hold of the ref. I'd ban whichever of them did that

all a bit of a mess, really. Doubtless the FA will go all ostrich on us and say something like the ref didn't make a complaint about being manhandled, or some other cop out

The ref stopped Firmino getting in Holgate's face so he was stood between them. Holgate then grabbed the ref in an attempt to get at Firmino after the supposed racist slur. There was no attempt at violent contact towards the ref.

shouldn't be allowed to grab hold of the ref under any circumstances. Should be made to stand with arms behind back if he needs to approach the ref

It weren't that bad, it was a kind of over reaction to Firminho's supposed slur. A kind of 'hey ref did you hear that?' Ref probably should have booked himself just prior for pushing Firminho!

It was a very hands on moment, a kind of official/player love in!

There was no aggressive intent towards the ref, unlike there was when he pushed Firminho ten seconds before.
