From our 92 world cup final side, only Hick and maybe De-Freitas get in to this one.

I think many of the current side would now get in an 'English best XI'. They seem to be considerably better players at the limited overs game.

If we looked at an 80's/90's team, it would be something like:

Gooch
Knight
Hick
Lamb
Fairbrother
Stewart
Botham
DeFreitas
Gough
Willis
Underwood

and a 90's/00's would be akin to:

Trescothick
Kieswetter
Trott
Pietersen
Thorpe
Collingwood
Flintoff
Bresnan
Swann
Harmison
Anderson

Decent players in both teams, but - on paper - neither of which would be able to muster much of a challenge against the current side!

Another way to look at how good the current team is, would be to look at the further improvement they have available when Stokes returns:

Roy
Bairstow
Root
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Woakes
Rashid
Plunkett
Wood

An extra 10 overs with the ball and a crackerjack in the field, with little downside in the batting!

Couple of early wickets for the Aussies. A change for England to bat first.

Aussies doing well at Sydney. Slightly slower wicket and England are struggling (90/3 in 19 overs) to score runs at a good pace. Aussies bowling looks better with 4
specialist bowlers this match.

Bairstow goes. England in a hole.

Cue commentators intoning that you have to bat out the overs.

You need wickets in hand.

That they are a bit naïve.

Four down. At least Buttler will get the opportunity for a long bat.

Morgan edges one to Paine. He has not been able to convert his starts into substantial innings this series. Aussies managing to break the partnerships. Jos needs to convert his 40 into a 100.

173/5.

What a knock by Jos and Woakes. 100 for Jos and 50 for Woakes. It's been a very good ODI partnership.

303 to win is a tough ask imo on this wicket. England favorites imo.

Switched on at 6:30.

Terrific stuff from JB and Woakes: 100 off 70 balls, therefore the first 200 was off 230+ Just shows what you can achieve with batting depth...

Is Chris Woakes becoming the World's best ODI number 8?

Brilliant late order batting from England. What happens to Woakes in a coloured kit?

Woakes continuing the good work with the ball now...Warner gone a bit tamely and not the start Australia needed.

These comparisons of teams are amusing but a little pointless . It seems reasonable to assume though that this current England team would give Australia's last WC winners a fine contest : who would win on a given day would surely be down to a couple of individual acts of brilliance.

England are clearly as good as anyone at ODI right now.. The test for them will be : can they produce the big performances at the next WC , when everyone is totally up for it. That will be what is remembered.

Some way to go, but remember England haven't been winning series away from home, so a win here would be a big scalp for them.

I think there's a tendency for England to be a good side in the lull in the WC cycle where other sides are tinkering with personnel before firming up their options as the competition gets closer. That happened in the previous gaps between WCs I reckon..

Well yes...that was what I was hinting at. The now despised Cook/Bell/Trott/KP etc outfit was top ranked at one point between cups , were they not ?

You do get the feeling this one might be different. Though I retain a bit of concern re the bowling. Perhaps - unlike previous England teams - this group are better suited to the total roads which are now common for ODI : and more vulnerable when there is something in the pitch for the bowlers ?

The interesting Aussie move of promoting White to number three hasn't led to much...he never really got going and Wood has had him caught behind with one that lifted sharply.

Smith in now and you'd think his partnership with Finch will be vital if Australia are to mount a real challenge.
