"Haseeb first thought of becoming a cricketer when he was in Mumbai with Safwaan. “I went to the MIG club where I had this brief interaction with Sachin Tendulkar. Haseeb was just seven at that point but he saw the kind of attention and adulation that the Indian cricket star gets. It was at this point, he decided to be a cricketer,” he says"
guessing he was part of the Mig Club I will try and find the Cricinfo article after my dinner.

Duckett played lions but not overseas yet and Hameed never been part of any group except for the under 19 and he got dropped for the Asia leg/world cup.
Although it turns out Hameed played a lot of cricket in Asia from a young age.

Dobell also stated that with Vince, Hales, Ballance, plus countless other openers not doing well, the Selectors had no choice but to pick players without lions experience

I wasn't aware that Hameed had played cricket at any level in Asia, given he's been playing for Lancashire since he was 12. Could you elaborate on this as I'm genuinely curious about it.

During Rajkot Test Journalist been saying he been spending time in Mumbai and Gujarat most winters apparently one ranji side offered him a contract which he rejected because he got a lancashire contract.
His dad sent him to some cricket academy in India when he was young and even played games in the famous park in Mumbai where tendulkar played club cricket.
I will try and find the article again but it been confirmed by his dad and brother that when he was young he use to come india every winter and play cricket.

Please do, because I've never seen anything which suggests this.

Please do, because I've never seen anything which suggests this.

The earlier article had him in a prestigious cricket academy at 8 in Mumbai.
http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-eng ... 65980.html
But for a twist of fate, Hameed could have ended up playing for India. His father, Ismail, who looked understandably emotional in the stands as his son reached his half-century with a delicious late cut for four off the world's No.1 rated Test bowler, tells a tale of the invitations extended their way after one of Haseeb's trips back to the land of his parents to work on his game on turning tracks.

Would he be interested in playing club cricket in Mumbai? Might he like to think of the Mumbai side in the Ranji Trophy as his target? Might he think of joining his heroes, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, as an Indian player?

It was never going to happen. By then, Haseeb was impressing in the Lancashire age-group teams.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-eng ... 65281.html
This was also the article saying they would like Hameed to play lions cricket but couldn't
He has two other key assets. A temperament described as "unflappable" by Cook and some experience of these conditions gained when his father, Ismail - a huge cricket lover who has clearly played a huge part in his son's development - arranged for him to spend time playing in Mumbai as a 13-year old. There he worked with the coach, Vidya Paradkar, and spent a couple of months playing on the city's maidans and learning to combat spin.

looks like he was again part of an academy age 13.
He returned ahead of the England Under-19 visit to Sri Lanka, spending a month developing his game, learning to use the crease and adding options to his game to ensure he wouldn't be tied down by spin bowling. It may take him a while to adjust - this is a huge jump in quality - but he should be able to rotate the strike better than many.
Spent time again before the sri lanka under 19 last year the tour that saw him dropped from the world cup because I think he either failed or scored slowly was quite harsh since england faced 2 top class under 19 teams in Asian conditions, England missed him as well considering 200 is a winning total in under 19 cricket.
"I have been to India a couple of times on my own. I have trained a bit in Mumbai, where I was fortunate that a coach, Vidya Paradkar, helped me get used to conditions.

"Spin plays a massive role here, but it's not just spin, there is more reverse swing than back home in England, I guess the more time you spend out here playing and batting and get used to it, you learn things about yourself and what the ball will do. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to come out here before and it's helped me get used to it."

The article says he spent a couple of months there when he was 13, not that he played for any real competitive side in proper cricket and that he had a bit of coaching last year. What level of cricket is an 8 year old seriously going to play.

Hardly that he's, to quote you, "Although it turns out Hameed played a lot of cricket in Asia from a young age."

You be surprised how seriously cricket is played in india especially in clubs or if they got a proper coach like Hameed had, he was working with some good coaches in india.
but from I heard from his parents interviews and reading articles it suggest he played quite a bit of cricket in asia way more than lets say duckett which at the end makes the difference of why he looks good in these conditions so far.
Anyway I think it is 99% likely that he took part in academy, very unlikely his dad somehow got a very good coach to work with hameed outside the academy system.
Considering vast majority of the coaches are part of the academy system, not sure one indian ranji player has came outside the academy system.
I suspect his dad paid for hameed to be part of a cricket camp that most academy run every year for couple of weeks or a month.
Anyway it is up to you to believe the quotes or information.

Also do think playing cricket age 13, 19 and 8 is way more cricket in asia than what vast majority of the english cricket squad or County cricket players ever played before they turned 20.
Especially when you considering his dad said they regularly go to india every year.
Might see if I can get the BBC TMS podcast interview from his Dad suspect that might have more information on this if you need it Splinters.

sorry for making a new post but if Mumbai are interested him very likely he was playing Competitive youth cricket and in a top academy camp or club where the state had scouts looking for talent.
Anyway Adi should know more about this, since he quite knowledgeable on how Club cricket, academies and youth structure works especially in Mumbai he might even know about http://www.migcricketclub.org/cricket.html where Hameed met tendulkar when he was 8.

Edit here family talking to TMS.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04g53xh
listening to it now so I will let you know later if it add anymore about Hameed india playing links.

Dad said Hameed got a bit of Azharuddin in him and root and they said he will be staying for the full tour since he still coaches him apart from that the TMS didn't add much on his india links.
If you still interested Splinter can ask Dobell on twitter since he generally replies to my enquires and he should know more about it.
but I would say at the moment it is likely Hameed played some good standard of cricket in india when he was young and still had links to the place considering he spent time their last year.
Doubtful he only played street cricket or somehow turned out to know top indian coaches without being in some sort of club, academy or camp, considering Dobell wouldn't write an article about it if it just was street cricket.

Well, from what I can see from what you have given he played a bit of academy cricket when he was 8 and again when he was 13. Hardly an in depth or extensive experience of Indian cricket. Without an in depth knowledge of Indian cricket I would find it a push to say that playing in and around an Academy is good standard.

As I said above, this is the first I've heard of it, and given he's been a part of the Lancashire set up since he was 13 or so, is odd if it was anything significant given I've decent links with Lancashire and have had for decades.

Perhaps, just perhaps, it's been brought up now because like everything else Hameed he's supposedly the second coming.

Think you hit the point in the nail there.
Not sure anyone would have known any better if Hameed played SA or Aus this winter instead, feels like it is coming out because one they in india and two hameed had a home debut in Gujarat where the entire family is present and guessing the media been asking question and the information came out.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/f ... AydkJ.html
Seems like his older brother played club cricket and that is how he met Tendulkar since Tendulkar was using the clubs nets for practice.
It is in India when Haseeb fell completely in love with cricket in 2004. Haseeb’s eldest brother Safwan was playing a match at the MIG Cricket Club in Bandra when the two brothers met Sachin Tendulkar, who had come for a practice session. Haseeb, only seven at that time, who was accompanying his brother, was lucky to click a picture with the Indian batting legend. “There was a sea of people waiting to meet Sachin. That’s when Haseeb first got a feel of cricket and the passion for the game in India. That’s when he decided that cricket is going to be his future,” Safwan told Hindustan Times on Thursday.

It is on Mumbai’s maidans where he learnt his technique to bat.
As a 13-year-old, Haseeb made his first trip to Mumbai in 2010 because his father wanted him to learn the famous Bombay school of batsmanship — the khadoos way.
Haseeb’s father got in touch with his old friend Iqbal Shaikh, a former cop and MCA member, who put him on to coach Vidya Paradkar.
“My job was to make his basics stronger. Make him play with a straight bat and in the V (mid-on and mid-off areas). The biggest mistake many coaches make is when they train the batsman put his foot in line with the ball. The legendary Gary Sobers has said this that the bat should come down in ball’s line and not the foot,” Paradkar, who trained Haseeb for around three months, told said.

Seems like the indian coaches who worked with him are also speaking to the press.
Haseeb would bat at Cross Maidan for three to four hours in a day broken into morning and evening sessions. He also played a few friendly games against quality opponents where he remained unbeaten most of the times, which left Paradkar highly impressed. “He wouldn’t throw his wicket away which I liked the most. I wrote a message for him then that if he continued working on his game, he would soon play for England,” said a beaming Paradkar. “I was delighted when I read that he was picked for the Bangladesh tour,” he said with his voice full of pride.

Haseeb again made a one-month trip to Mumbai last year before flying to Sri Lanka to join the England U-19 team for a tri-series. “This time the main purpose was to learn how to play spin bowling. He was a much improved player. It was a treat to watch him. He used the crease brilliantly. He had also developed two to three different shots for each ball and executed them brilliantly in the nets. I was amazed,” said Paradkar.

This article better than the last one.
hope this helps splinter.
Have to give praise to Hameed and his father since they clearly worked hard to make him a better player, they could have easily just let Lancashire and ECB be in charge of his development.

Well, unless you're going to claim that a couple of months in India was the key point in his development - apologies if I find the notion of him "learnt his technique to bat" during this time slightly ridiculous - over 6+ years in the English system, I think you'll find the English system did a pretty good job.

All of the articles about this mystical time where he learnt everything he now knows, seem to provide absolutely no detail about it. Strangely enough Hameed himself has never made a big deal about it.

But, no, he's in the England side because he spent some months in India as a kid and that is where he learnt his cricket, all of it. Let's leave it at that fully sound conclusion and move on.

TBH I don't think it was key point in his development but it did make a difference to why he doing well in india though and lets say why Duckett failed considering if Duckett had the same experiences he wouldn't be playing like that.
Suspect him being already accustomed to india made it easier for him to make his debut.
Which was my point in the beginning that England didn't think hameed would work out well in asia because he didn't have lions experience but it turned out he had good playing experiences in india anyway so in a way had the lions setup already.
also think you just found out what masala news is, chances are all these stories came out now and all these coaches randomly remembering him from ages at the very time hameed playing for england, wouldn't surprise me if there an article of him scoring 300s coming out soon lol or some coach having a story of that lol.

Anyway apologise if you misread my point earlier anyway this is all I could find on Hameed india links.

there is anecdotal information that he spent a few weeks there when he was 13

I know you don't like the hameed hype at the moment but you could say Hameed experiences in india are essentially the same thing of lets say people playing county cricket or the young Indian players playing club cricket in india or the club cricketers in Australia etc making them more of a better rounded player but they all will still say their home facilities produced the player or learnt the trade, guessing his father sent him to india to face Spin and improve that part of the game since I highly doubt he got to face much spin or turning tracks in Lancashire, same way people travel to Australia to learn about bounce and pace, England for seam and swing plus cold weather anyway what hameed did should be looked as a positive and not a negative Making Splinters.
I will admit the articles are saying some daft things but that indian news for you, probably one reason Dobell didn't mention any of it and basically summed it up better.

Seriously one of the articles said he spent 3 months in india and played 8 games.
that pretty much close to a season in india.
in my opinion that good playing experiences in india considering I doubt more than 5 people in the county system aged before 20 ever played that many games or time in india before.
Anyway it up to you lot how you read the evidence.
