That stat of batting averages was so bad, I had to look up more.

In the post-war years, this is the fourth worst averaging England line up, and the worst since 1999.
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... ;type=team

The years 1998-2001 and 1984-89 account for 9 of the top 16 worst, with 3 more in the 1950s.

It's also one of only 7 years when England have failed to pass 400 in any innings. And they've had more attempts this year than any other calendar year when they failed to make 400 once.
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... ;type=team

Finally, it's been a terrible year for individual hundreds. Not the worst (0 in 1972), but only twice (1972, of course, and yes, 1999 again) do we have a worse ratio of hundreds scored to innings batted.
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=batting

So in conclusion, not quite the worst England batting year in my lifetime, as 1999 was worse, but only just. It's that bad.

Oh, and they've actually got one more test to get worse.

35 overs down, 55 (at least) to go. NZ are actually ahead of the rate. Santner bowling all morning from one end has helped, but isn't it funny how in a world of over rates at 12-13 an hour, teams can rattle along at 15-16 if they really want to get a few more in during the day...

Drat England for doing just well enough to give me a glimmer of hope. I expect it to be cruelly snuffed out by tea.

Another gift, what sort of shot is that in this situation

Denly must be getting pretty annoyed at the other end after watching burns, root and stokes gift their wickets away

Sigh.

Seven down, and really only Denley can claim to have been got out. Five batsmen gone chasing at wide ones they could have left. FFS.

Buttler bowled not offering a shot :facepalm

How can they be this useless on a flat pitch?

We'll shortly be down to third worst average since the war...

I'm not sure what's worse. Just being cr@p, or as in this case, clearly having the capability to save this test match on this wicket, and stuffing it up due to poor judgement.

Batting first on this pitch and losing by an innings just isn't ok

did anyone really expect anything else?

197 on the same pitch that NZ scored 600 and plenty on, and with NZ a bowler down

from the reports I've read, the manner of dismissal for most showed a complete disregard for the match situation, but it will take some time for the Bayleaf 'look at the strike rate' influence to subside and more importantly for the side to generate some sort of belief in their ability to get out of these situations. I reckon they don't even believe that they can bat out a draw atm, and if they don't believe it, then they won't.

amazing how often a road becomes a minefield once England start batting

I'm not even going to read Root's post match interview, because I think I know what he will say.... he's said this stuff so many times in his tenure as captain

Yet 1985 was the best!

England are going to have to wait for a new generation of batters to emerge. The present selection is poor and the destruction of the CC damages short term prospects.

Well done to NZ. That was an overwhelming win. Wonder if they've beaten England by an innings before. They made the pitch look flat when they batted but took wickets freely when they bowled. Congratulations to BJ Watling on the double ton and for the feat of batting for 11 hours.

It's all ok though. Our barrings historically bad, so we sacked all the bowling coaches because they were apparently not doing their job, then promoted the most senior to the head coach job.

NZ beat England by an innings last year in Aukland when they were bowled out for 58. And in Christchurch in 1984, when they were all out for 82 and 93. So the recent defeat was easily the best of their innings losses to the Kiwis. Joe Root is welcome to use that line of reasoning.

England set to be unchanged. Because nothing says how to react to an innings defeat than no changes. Although I suppose they just would have tinkered with the bowling anyway.

NZ call up Henry for Boult rather than give Ferguson a debut :hmmm

NZ Mitch2 Daryl Mitchell looks set for a debut to replace Big Man Colin.
