Why am I more optimistic of England's chances than English supporters? Funnier and stranger things have happened than England winning crickets world cup.

I believe that may have been the last year I supported England and made the complete switch to being an Australian having immigrated to Sydney in 1971.

My Mum is Welsh, I'm American by birth for all of 11 months and then basically grew up on US air force bases until immigrating from the UK in 71 to Oz. So half a pom, actually more of a mongrel than anything.

Yes and there have been many an argument to this ruling of Pohm and what it means and how it's spelled. I remember 30 odd years ago listening to a historian on the radio saying that there was no clear proof of what the convicts were originally called. Even Wikipedia seems confused.

I like to think they were called Pohms and not the pom argument from as being pomegranates. That latter makes no sense because it's like which came first the chicken or the egg? To nickname the English prisoners poms (from sunburning) suggests there were already Australians there that spoke English. Um nope there were not. Those be Aboriginals and I doubt pomegranate was in their vocab.

I think it came from prisoners of her majesties services.

Not sure if we will ever know, but as always I stand to not be corrected.

Also Steve wouldn't the guards, the wives and all the originals settlers building the prisons been English? Surely they would have gotten burnt badly also. So why would they turn around and call the kettle black, no pun intended.

Ha,ha to true GarlicJam, though I have to say 14 years in America now is taking it's toll. I miss home in Tasmania, but my Kiwi wife loves America as do my kids. I'm screwed.
