I'm not sure he'd be ideal as captain - mainly for the workload reasons plus the danger of him trying to change his free style - but despite his fiery onfield behaviour he seems much more sensible than those two so in that respect he would be more suited. When he talks about the game he speaks well. Then again the ECB sanctions might not let him be captain ...unless he moves to Surrey!

Given that Borthwick must be thinking of getting in the Test team (I can't imagine he's going to get in a limited overs side) who was the last Surrey player to make a debut for England in Tests? I'll look it up in a while, but has it happened this century? Batty was at Worcs when he first played (he's the only current Surrey player with a Test cap for England). Maybe Tremlett? Don't think he first played while at Hants.

Since 2005 no Surrey player has made a test debut. Only Yorkshire and Notts are ahead of Durham in that regard - Borthwick is one of them.

and Notts only bought their players in, they didn't develop them.... or at least not many of them
