I would have thought that even though it is not demanded countries would want to field a neutral umpire to avoid any insinuations after a poor umpiring performance.

Make no mistake about it, the umpiring was poor and all went in one direction.

Don't think ICC got many umpires available at the moment even in NZ they used 2 international panel umpires and not 1 elite and 1 international panel umpires.

Think many of the elite umpires are taking a rest from white ball cricket at the moment.
Personally think they should extend elite panal list so every game can be covered by ICC.
not sure 12 men are enough for the job, especially when most of the umpires come from 2 nations.

Mumbai Cricket Association has around 180 umpires on the panel out of which 20 are on BCCI panel. Around 6 umpires appeared for level 3 viva / voce / practs and 3 of those passed. Hopefully other associations in India will follow MCA in some aspects where no other global domestic cricket association can match us.

Most of them are club cricketers. They have played 15 plus years of club cricket imo including Dr. H.D.Kanga league. First they appear MCA exams and passed umpires get to officite in domestic recognised, Kanga League. Failed umpires dont get to re-appear. One of my clubmate also passed last year. So i can get free tickets as i think the umpires get two free passes. :dance These umpires attend classes in evening for two hours. There is bit of wrongs in it though but i dont want to post it over here due to some reasons an di dont want to get on record.I agree there are issues, but here and there and odd one.I dont want to give any more info on negatives as everything is confidential. The umpires are threatened in some Kanga matches by club cricketers when fights may occur due to a decission. So they work in some harsh conditions at times. They also get Harris and Giles sheild assignment. Some umpires who pass higher exams get Ranji as well. They know rules but it is impossible to remember all rules even after playing so much of club cricket. I guess you would agree as you have also played club cricket lot and you must know how tough rules are in the whole rule book. Still they are good for that levels. Level 3 exam is taken by BCCI. So they are qualified. Umpiring courses and certifications have improved here. Quality will improve, give some time.

Dont be surprised if the odd one like Ravi touches his hat after an appeal.

Shamshuddin unlikely to umpire in the 3rd game.
Don't really like the way England dealt with it or the media.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricke ... clash.html
most likely a mistake, rather than any malicious intent, plus it is impossible to have 2 neutral umpires in every game or format, although hopefully they do have DRS in every format now.
Shamshuddin shouldn't have even been umpire in the game considering he just came back from Australia.
Although seeing a pattern now for some odd reason the elite umpires don't do ODI anymore looks like they only doing Test matches, with the international panel doing the ODI.

Seems like the standard of the umpiring below elite is quite poor considering the umpiring in the NZ vs Australia series wasn't that great either.

If you're going to have two home town umpires then you absolutely need to have DRS. If you're not going to have DRS then you absolutely need to have at least 1 neutral umpire.

I don't think anyone on here is taking this as anything but a poor umpire making bad decisions, but, let's face it, when you're having big moments incorrectly going against the touring team in this situation then you're going to leave yourself open to accusations. I don't see why it is worth having that risk.

I expect England will be unchanged. Perhaps Plunkett will come in for Daws.

Not really sure why anyone should suspect the umpire made anything but an honest mistake (x2) just as mistakes are made by every umpire operating. For minor games like T20Is, it seems reasonable not to bring in neutral umpires. That would feel like overkill. These matches have no consequences. And tv replays can be resisted as they slow the game down. If we accept the decision in good faith, they just don't suit the format which does haven't the gravitas to make it worthwhile. Everyone, most especially the England captain and coaches, should just not create or make worse controversy. It is they who are in the wrong.

I doubt anyone really suspects the umpire made anything other than (somewhat glaring) errors . In fact I don't altogether blame him missing the edge in the "out" decision at the end : it wasn't immediately apparent even to the commentators and with the sound level at the ground it is easy to see why he heard nothing. (Probably made little difference anyway as Root was struggling to hit the ball off the square)
He is much more culpable for not fingering Kohli early on : that lbw was just so obvious it is hard not to suspect that he just wasn't game to make a decision against the Indian skipper in the first few overs...I think that the feeling around this one helped to fuel England's frustration over the late bad call. But as Arthur says , the tourists should certainly not have made a fuss about it : it is poor form for a start to grumble about umpiring decisions in public ; and it also risks the team developing a "world is against us " attitude which won't help them in the future - though in this case the tour is all but done anyway...

I would however like to see one drs challenge available as in the fifty over game - it is hardly going to add much to the time taken so I don't buy the argument that it would go against the "quick" nature of the format...if anything it goes rather well with the theatrical aspect - they could introduce suspenseful music for the wait as the evidence is examined :)

Agree no need for neutral umpires - cannot hurt the locals to gain some experience in big match conditions ; and the presence of drs would also take a bit of the pressure off them - and cut down on complaints from aggrieved visitors.

Surprised to find myself arguing for drs : I am one who would prefer the game without it altogether ! But that imp is out of the bottle a long time ago ; and I see no valid reason why it shouldn't apply to all international matches .

What's annoying is if England get a decision their way, mostly, it's forgotten about and not mentioned (obviously there was more said over Broad's edge than maybe any umpiring mistake ever, but England were happy to take it) but if it goes against them, the coaches are out on the pitch accosting the umpires. From cricinfo (borrowed from a poster on The Guardian, apparently not contested by Mathews.

2.4

Mathews to Buttler, no run, everyone except the umpire is convinced there was an under edge as Buttler gave himself some room to cut. Snicko shows a big spike as the ball passed the bat. Oh, dear. How costly will that decision prove to be? NO DRS, remember

From a T20 last year. Buttler went on to win the game for England.

So, it would be wrong to make him feel uncomfortable - or unfair. He should be allowed to do his job as we are ours. I think he will be under enough pressure - external pressures from what happened the other night - anyway.

Says Joe Root going into this game... after criticising the umpire for his decision. England have done nothing other than publicly expose this umpire for his perceived incompetence, and to put him under pressure. Maybe Root should have called for DRS after the Buttler incident above, it would at least look less self serving.

Well said Arthur.

I have felt for quite a while now that t20s should have one DRS just like 50 overs matches. I agree with alfie on this.

If there is a world T20 champs in 2018 IMHO England have to be favourites. They are playing good cricket in this format.

One DRS won't add greatly to the time provided they get wrong and lose it but if they keep getting it correct it could add considerably to time. For me leave T20 alone, players just have to get used to it as they do playing CC games. Players don't walk when they nick the ball helping the umpire get it right, so stuff em when the umpire gets it wrong.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Don't mind england complaing a bit after the game but always mentioning it days after or the media attack on the umpire not really on.
the ironic part is if BCCI remove Shamshuddin they will actually get a worse umpire with no international experience.
Newman articles on it been very poor and hypocritical considering it is bloody T20 no one really cares about it and frankly most people are happy to have 2 neutral umpires in it.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricke ... India.html

How does Newman expect ICC or BCCI for the matter to fly out a foreign umpire for one friggin game that too at short notice.

the only part BCCI did wrong was to give Shamshuddin the 2nd game, should have been rested and officiated in the 3rd game.

Also the umpire likely to replace Shamshuddin won't be great, if anyone seen IPL they will know the standard of the indian umpires are so poor, why do think for years india never had any umpires in the Elite panel, Although saying that S ravi been quite good lately but with him being an elite umpire now he isn't likely to ever work in india home T20 or odi games.

quite sad that the umpire has to stand down because of the huge scrutiny the guy been facing recently.
Not sure I like the way the english media been behaving in the last few days, they been going over the top with the criticism of the poor umpiring.
