Id pick Hales.

Over root?

You must be joking

Guy averages 60+ at a strike rate over 90 the last 4 years

Him and Morgan are the glue that allows Roy, bairstow, buttler and stokes to play the way they do

If we want to win the world cup you cant just have sloggers 1 to 7 50 overs is a long time and you need players who can hold the innings together to win consistently

I'd pick Root, he's remarkably consistent. He goes past fifty every other innings (since last WC). SR of 90.

Last stat. Averages since last WC.

Not to big up Honest Joe, but to show how well the whole top six is. And Stokes is doing better in the last couple of years. Even Woakes is doing remarkably.

England lose an average of 7 wickets per innings under Bayliss. The current 8/9/10/11 has two players whos combined runs per innings breaches the gulf of Root to Hales average, and carries with it a SR of 100. By pure mathematics, Roots extra runs are therefore a burden compared to the weight of his extra average. England could afford to average a 8/9 wicket loss, andwould have a better score on average if they did.

To illustrate. In 75 ODIs they have been bowled out 13 times in the period assigned (worth noting, there is a handful of massive scores in that all out, including 4 over 300, and 4 of 250 plus).... picking Root would pretty much mean that in 13 out of 75 times, youd expect a better score, and the rest, you wouldnt.

Campbell and Hope decided not to hang around. It makes me wonder what the West Indies ODI future holds when Gayle retires.
