I am not sure that Punter was the right man for the job tbf, seemed to bring a lot of unnecessary conflict to the team at times, but then again he did oversee what was always going to be a difficult relative time for Australia.

Punter had a rather mixed record as captain. From the outside looking in, I liked his style. Batted with the team in mind, and was a fighter.

Yes I struggled with Ponting, but he did have a lot of success particularly in the One Day format.

Be amazed if they get back out there looking at the rain radar. Currently a dry patch somewhere near the Mersey heading Leeds' way, but in the time it takes to dry the outfield the next batch will be imminent.

Thing NZ have to take from that is that the longer the delay, the less chance England have of winning so the more into their shell they may go, making it easier to bowl at them.

Rules are different everywhere, but the last time I heard what they were over here, you could make up all the time lost in that day. It may have changed.

Indeed. His greatest achievement was arguably beating the Indians in 2007-08, but the conduct he allowed his side to show (and he himself by claiming the catch that never was) consigned the result of the series to a mere footnote. In 2005 his poor sportsmanship left a sour note on a series that had been played very hard and with a certain respect between the teams.

I guess, apart from England's crumbling in 2006-07, and the Aussies victory in South Africa in 2009 (Although South Africa had no Graeme Smith by memory, and Kallis was captain with a downgraded bowling attack), Australia failed to win many big series. He lost 3 out of 4 Ashes series, and the Aussies got beat in India in 2008 and 2010/11. They won in 2004/05 vs India, by memory quite comfortably, but Gilchrist was captain... why he didn't take over permanently was beyond me.

I felt that Ponting always cracked under the pressure a little, either becoming cautious when Australia were put on the back foot, or becoming angry and confrontational. A good example was at Nagpur in 2008, when he hardly bowled his seam attack despite them looking decent, and stuck to part timers rotating.
