No. It just seems funky ideas here. One could argue that no longer after the whatever mid off went in the batsman produced a swipe at the ball, but I dont think they are related. I generally love a fielder close on the drive, in fact I believe that when England had Collingwood it was a position they used to great effect, if only to stop batters really commiting to driving.

But asking Joe Root to catch edges on a reaction time of 0.0000002 seconds is a plan that is beyond the realm of sensibility. He has more chance of having his face smashed into 15 billion pieces fielding that close than catching the ball.

If you are on a pitch where edges keep not carrying, then fine. But England havent exactly produced edges that have fell short.... more chance of Root drpping or deflecting a ball out the way of a conventional slip catcher than holding onto one.

Last thing to do on the arrival of a tail end batsman is to remove your third man, that´s their main area to score. Cook doesn´t know this yet.
