Overton must be down the queue. Though he played in this series.

Woakes did himself a few favours.

Jennings for Sri Lanka has faded. Denly to be dropped and wait for it ... Bairstow to bat at 3.

Archer in the Mail
'Now we go to Sri Lanka, and it might be a repeat of the pitches in New Zealand. If the elbow isn't good enough, I can't see them sending me to Sri Lanka. We've got a long summer of cricket coming up. We've got a Twenty20 World Cup and the physios will have a plan for my wellbeing.

Broad doesn't mind not going because of the pitches.

Anderson is bowling again this week and wants to go. (Tests & warm-up games in Sri Lanka, Strauss (c) 95.4-26-236-16 and Root (c) 53-9-142-2)
New Zealand in SL Southee and Boult did ok, 7 at 18.28 and 8 at 21.37

I think the squad is named next week.

Smith telling Bairstow to 'rest' and come back as a top order bat sounds like grade A ******* to me.

It reminds me of the old story about Ron Atkinson when the trainer went on to look at a concussion and came back to Big Ron and said it doesn't look good boss, he doesn't know who he is. To which Atkinson said, tell him he's Pele and get him back on.

Joe Root has broken his new toy. Archer gone home to recover. Doubt for Sri Lanka. Mahmood replaces him in T20s.
He better not break Wood. :scared

Woody might very well break himself

wrap him up in cotton wool until it's time for the CC to start and then he can get some overs under his belt doing something useful

JB2 doesn't appear to be in the ODI squad, which is odd, given that white ball is what he's best at

have I missed something?

Resting I suppose. Can't see Gentle Ben in there either. Nice to see Mo is back.

England seem to have abandoned the strategy of hitting out of a crisis.

In fairness the World Cup winning team needed dismantling and would struggle to play a lengthy tournament as a unit. Though the amount of players in and around the team who will be over 30 for the next World Cup in India is a problem area. Then there is another issue of the best domestic players not playing 50 over cricket because of The Hundred.

Curran goes after a slow seven. Crucial partnership now. Woakes and Denly need to bat ten overs for 50 runs.

Is Sam Curran really a number 7 bat, bearing in mind he barely averages 20 in one day cricket?
