For all that's made of his troubles with pace, spinners are probably broads biggest weakness.... I remember Broad making Duminy look like Murali on our last SA tour

Obviously that catch was not a catch, but my question is about Broad's right to merely question the umpire's decision - which resulted in an umpire review - without using the review option.

Otherwise, isn't he just disputing the umpire's decision? Which is against the Spirit of the Game.

I think the question is whether Broad did dispute it exactly. The TV pictures didn't show anything of Broad between Erasmus raising his finger and the review starting. Perhaps the square leg umpire advised Erasmus to go upstairs.

Broad directly asked Erasmus "are you sure that it carried?"

Seems like a disputation to me.

Not arguing with the umpiring, Sussex - although, maybe Erasmus should have said to Broad "are you reviewing?" before calling. As I don't think he was going to review until Broad's question.


As I say, obviously the right outcome was reached, my question is a matter of process.

Broad's entitled to dispute it in a sense - he was looking down at the ball when the catch was/wasn't taken so perhaps he actually saw the ball drag along the ground. He could have asked to review without making the signal.
