Certainly rather lose to a full strength Australia.

Tavere?

He was certainly painful at times to watch. Never forget when he deflected the catch off Botham into was it Hemmings? England winning the Melbourne test by 3 runs.

I watched that match in a living room of about a dozen Aussie SCUBA divers in Tasmania. Nobody knew I was supporting England, and as I was only 18 and they were in their mid 20's I kept it to myself. Very strange situation.

I think they way they rotate and the present depth of the side, there are fairly much always full strength.

Geoff Miller caught it.

Tavare's son plays County Cricket now. Fabian.

Pretentious, moi?

Geoff Miller was it, you've been taking those memory pills that I need.

One hell of a test match. England may have saved Borders career that day.

Yes that must be true, even Boycott looked like Afridi next to Tavere.

Tavare was a much better player than he's ever given credit for. He was given a specific task to perform by England, which earned a good stroke maker the reputation he now has.

There is another Fabian - surname Cowdrey. Quite promising I believe.

I have nothing, but painful memories of watching Tavere. It was bad enough that there was so little on TV in Australia back then and to then be inflicted with this Kafka like character nearly caused Me and Cricket to get a divorce.

I'm glad for him though that he has found a place in history for something.

I like this from Wikipedia; Alex Massie wrote that, for Tavaré, scoring runs seemed "a disagreeable, even vulgar, distraction from the pure task of surviving.

That's priceless.

Why won't they beat SL in Wellington? Remember they had the better of SL in SL outside Colombo recently and that side had Cook and no Anderson plus an out of form Finn.

Tavare will take that reputation to his grave but IMHO, and those more knowledgeable than me, he could tonk it round the ground with the best of them. His FC and LIst A records are more than reasonable. The point that is being missed is that he had a task to perform which he probably took to the extreme - but his contribution to the 1981 Ashes was not insignificant - he got under the Aussies skin which paved the way for Botham's heroics.

By the way, his nephew's name is Will and he plays for Gloucestershire I think.

I got Cowdrey and Tavare mixed up, regarding Fabian. Sorry chaps. Easily done.
