'Opening batsman Devon Smith has replaced Chris Gayle in West Indies' Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa. A WICB release on Friday simply stated that Gayle "has been replaced due to injury". Gayle last played an international match in September, and despite being touted for a quick recovery from a lower back injury, he did not feature in even a single game during West Indies' curtailed tour of India in October. He did, however, return to competitive cricket by signing up for Lions in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge, scoring two fifties and a hundred in his first three games.'

Gayle collided with De Kock in the Ram Slam, and was badly injured as a result.

"Robin Peterson, the left-arm spinner, has been recalled to the South Africa Test squad for the home series against West Indies later this month. He is the only specialist spinner in the 14, replacing the injured Dane Piedt. Lions batsman Temba Bavuma and pacer Kagiso Rabada gain maiden Test call-ups, while Cape Cobras batsman Stiaan van Zyl, who was picked in the squad for the Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe series' in July-August but is yet to debut, stays on. Legspinner Imran Tahir, who last played in that Sri Lanka series in July, has been dropped. Seamer Wayne Parnell is also not part of this squad. The injured JP Duminy, as expected, misses out as well, but might be ready for action later on in the three-Test series which begins on December 17."

Gayle sustained a back injury while in South Africa, which will make batting for long periods of time difficult

Not that Gayle would survive for 'sustained periods" against quality fast bowlers in tests anyway. He'd probably last longer and face more deliveries in the Ram Slam.
But seriously, it sounds like a very convenient excuse. The fact is he is still playing while injured at a great risk of aggravating his injury ahead of the WC, particularly considering the injury issues he has suffered over the past year or so. Not that I think he should be in the WC squad anyway but if you think his priorities are in the right place, then you really need a reality check.

Does it make any sense to carry a 35 year old mercenary, whose fitness has been on a sharp downward curve for quite some time now, who, even when fit, is fit to play in lucrative T20 leagues but
"not fit to bat for sustained periods" and most importantly, averages in the early 20s in ODI cricket over the last 2 years with ONE fifty plus score against a top 8 nation in TWO YEARS? Even if you include the Bangladesh games, he has got 1 fiffy in 5 games against them. Should he be in the WC side, especially considering the diva he is?
