Locusts.

The bitey flea that caused the plague.

Aphids.

Aeroplanes fly through the air too so my theory isn't water-tight.

Both Tassie and New Zealand are very protective of their agricultural industries, and being islands, quarantine can be pretty effective. As you enter Tassie (or leave Melbourne now), inspections, sniffers dogs and questions (as well as threat of fines) are in place to deter people from bringing fruit, fish products, raw meats, etc into the state.

As infestation of fruit fly can have permanent and hugely costly affect on various producers. Vietnam recently cut off fresh food trade with Aus due to rumours of a certain pest (South American, European??) being spotted in a shipment from mainland Aus, and that is just tip of the iceberg sort of stuff.

Tassie used to be "The Apple Isle" as it used to be one of the major exports from the island. It's shaped is also vaguely apple-shaped.

I am at the airport now, waiting to fly to Melbourne. Good thing I am allergic to fruit.
