A good chance for England to overturn the result and move up the test rankings.

I think they had four last time they were over here but I may be wrong.

Strange how its all gets worked out.

Australia and India 5
Pakistan and SA 4
NZ and Sri Lanka 2
Not sure what WI get over here these days.
I guess its a mixture of test status and crowd drawing potential.

They fitted in a five match ODI series against Australia, so there was one fewer Test that summer, so yes, SA played three.

England have stopped playing BD at home. SA will have to wait five years for a tour. Pakistan will have waited six years by the time of next years' visit, but after the trouble last time, I expect the ECB didn't want them back. Extra series have been fitted in against Australia and India.

If England played BD, the other eight Test sides (apart from England) would fit nicely into a four year cycle. Five Tests v Aus, five or four v Ind/SA, four v Pakistan/ two v BD and two or three v WI, NZ, SL.

Pakistan tour two years after next, by the looks of it, so two tours, in three years.

Things get complicated by not playing BD. It means you have to schedule a short extra tour in a four year cycle. I think the Ashes are supposed to go back to every four years after this one. There's a POV that Clarke squeezed extra Ashes series into the end of his period in charge to make it look that he had been financially good for the ECB. And apparently, they have a lot of money. But just playing extra series against India and Australia isn't sustainable. They'll lose their attraction. For me that has already happened.

If England hadn't played an early series in Australia in 2013/14, I wonder how different the England team would look?

I think all Cricket fans were not happy with the extra ashes series.

As for future test series. Four tests maximum maybe the way to go. This way, you can fit in three against another team, and still have time for the ODI's and T20's. OR only have a short ODI tri-series.

Five feels like a good length for a series, and it won't be abandoned for the Ashes. And the two Test series that summer would be either BD or or an extra series v someone. But maybe 4+3 would be a better way to go otherwise.
