They call Wood a swing bowler, is that correct? If so he could do well in those conditions. We certainly need someone wo is genuine swing bowler to replace Anderson.

Woody noted for reverse swing rather than traditional. Claimed 5fers on each visit to TB.

for his first 3 years in the senior squad he pretty much only played in the matches at TB. Famously, and recently, Durham defended a modest final innings target against Notts when Colly chose not to take the new ball with only 30odd runs required, because he felt the ball was starting to reverse, and Woody ran through the tail to claim an unlikely looking win.

cant say I can recall ever seeing footitt bowl but given the obsession there seems to have been to get a left-arm seamer involved then its a bit of a surprise hes not been in the frame before now looking at his FC record

I don't think I've seen him bowl either. Probably not been mentioned earlier because his wickets have been in division 2.

did he not have a good year last year when Derbyshire were in div 1?

were Derby in div 1 last year, or was it the year before?

I have no idea any more

How about Rashid for Buttler with Bairstow getting the gloves back? tongue in cheek, obviously, but had Jonny B scored runs this week, I could see it happening... Ali/Stokes at 5/6............. actually i could see that happening at the oval if England avoid defeat at TB and if JB2 scores heavily and JB1 still looks flummoxed

cant see it happening at all personally

buttler has been improving all the time with the gloves and has done enough with the bat to be persevered with

Year before I think-Northants & Lancashire were in last year. Actually, looking at the game at CLS he took 6 wickets in the first innings! I'm sure I'll have been there at some stage but don't remember it. He took 1 wicket in the away game but that was effectively an innings win.

The suggestion on Ch5 highlights was, since so many of England's middle order have been throwing the bat, that JB1 has had to try and steady things down instead of playing his naturally counterattacking game. Not sure I buy that.... he's just looked very uncomfortable during the little I've seen of him at the crease this summer

Saw him bowl on TV in a couple of 50 over games and he looked very good and fast. He famously broke Micheal Klinger's forearm in one game that I saw. I was calling on him to be in the WC quad as I thought his pace would be of value in Oz/NZ.

Just Wood for Anderson for me. One or two players on both sides finding out that cricket at this level and intensity is a massive step up from both county and state cricket. As Bell said before the third Test -' it's brutal'.

A Test debut in this critical game is a big ask and I've little doubt they'll go for Wood who at least has had a taste for Test cricket and the Ashes, and played pretty well IMHO. For that reason I would also expect Plunkett to get the nod if Wood isn't fit.

Quelle surprise, all the talk of left wing selections did not materialise.

Footitt is left arm and a bit left field. Hopefully left wing.

I'd be shocked if Footitt plays.

I saw Stoneman and Rushworth being talked up in the press.

He's carrying a bit of extra poundage these days. He might not make it to three balls.

I see the great man has moved into the football business. He was probably on his way to apply for a coaching job at Durham and got lost, but got a coaching job anyway. Too bad Peter Moores didn't get lost on a couple of his previous job applications.
