Aus v Eng ODI series

Postby from_the_stands » Fri Aug 14, 2015 1:18 am

The Aussies have announced their squad for the upcoming 5 ODI's and T20I; Steven Smith (capt), Ashton Agar, George Bailey, Joe Burns, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade (wk), Shane Watson, David Warner. MJ & Josh Hazlewood will be rested for this series, along with Shaun Marsh, it seems, who was left out in place of Marcus Stoinis. I'm really looking forward to seeing Joe Burns in this, whom I would say will fill in for the injured Aaron Finch at the top of the order, and should do a good job.

My best XI from this squad;

Dave Warner
Joe Burns
Steve Smith
George Bailey
Shane Watson
Glenn Maxwell
Matthew Wade
Ashton Agar
Mitchell Starc
James Pattinson
Pat Cummins

Twatto should be nowhere near the side.

I guess for England Moeen will come back into the squad.

Will Broad join him? My team, given Morgan has to be in (I'd prefer Stokes higher up and another bowler in).

Moeen
Hales
Root
Taylor
Buttler
Morgan
Stokes
Willey
Rashid
Wood
Finn
------
Billings
S.Patel
Plunkett
Roy

So that's Bairstow, and the Overtons missing from the NZ series. Realistically, Bairstow will be in.

In 2009 the Aussies gave us a good thumping in the ODI series and returned home thinking they were not so bad a team as the defeat in the ashes might suggest. England went on to give them a thumping in the 2010-11 ashes, facing almost the same squad. Maybe we should adopt a similar plan in this series, let them thump us and so set them up for the next ashes in Oz.

Actually, Woakes for Plunkett. I might get him in the side somehow too.

No Johnson for Australia. With the tourists selecting a bit of a more progressive squad, England might have more of a chance than usual, particularly if the weather stays overcast.

Leave Woakes alone for the rest of the domestic season is a better idea, after all he's only been playing for a few weeks.

Bairstow will be in for Taylor.

Samit is one of the stand out limited overs cricketers available to England. I guess he doesn't get a go because he doesn't show up well when they photograph them in their pants.

Ansari has shown promise with both batting and spin bowling. Samit, and Taylor have been inconsistent in their performances which is why Notts have had such a poor year.

Though Taylor and Samit have more runs in fifty over cricket this season. Samit has a ton and Taylor three fifties to Ansari's one fifty. Patel has more wickets at a better econ and average than Ansari. Though they all play different roles.

I wasn't comparing Asari to Samit and Taylor just remarking on his promise. He was in the squad that went to Ireland early this year so he has been identified by the selectors.

Steven Davies has been very successful opening in the RL games often out shining Roy. His 40 average in first class cricket and this year 69, also suggest he's pretty good. Maybe at 29 he's regarded as too old.
