Well that final episode gave me 4 wickets and 2 catches for my FL team so it wasn't entirely a waste of time.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

At least it got interesting after four days of batsmen boosting their batting averages.

Moeen and Rashid will go to the next test feeling good about their bowling which is big plus.

Reminds me of the 2011 India-West Indies at Mumbai which went along similar lines for the first 4 days before the pitch suddenly exploded on Day 5. That test ended up as a tied draw, thanks to bad light. Shame England couldn't reprise Karachi. :( Sometimes, you wonder whether this sport would be better off if it followed common sense.

After England finish 80 ahead, Pakistan are bowled out for 183 and then England knock off the 104 needed for victory in eight and a half overs.

Just a reminder of what you said yesterday, Aidan!

Blimey, nothing happens for four days then this. Well played England for nearly pulling of an Adelaide esque victory.

That final day at Karachi was my first proper cricketing memory. How I wish it was replicated

So how do England go forward from here? Take the positives from the way they've performed under the might of the scoreboard (even if this was a flat pitch, just look at how feebly Australia crumbled last year) pressure and nearly pulling off a final day heist? Or do they get disheartened over being just 25 runs short and ponder what might've been?

Still think Pakistan are a much stronger team in these conditions especially with Yasir set to be back but surely England have got to believe they can win now? The toss will be crucial. If England can bat first, they can certainly post a big total and this Pakistan batting lineup whilst very good in the UAE can still crumble under pressure and Rashid seems to be a different bowler with runs on the board (which was evident not just today but in the ODIs throughout the summer too). The good thing about Cook is that when he gets a big score early in the series, he is someone who goes on a run scoring spree, as compared to a KP, whose innings were often series defining but they were one-offs and rarely did he dominate throughout the series. But this batting line up still feels heavily reliant on Cook and Root and I hope they don't get carried away by this performance and bring in Taylor. There are only 4 specialist batsmen in this team (if you count Bairstow and one of them is Bell!). I'd bring in Taylor for Wood, which may seem odd after this run fest but I doubt the pitches will be as flat as this for the rest of the series and ultimately, playing 6 bowlers didn't prevent England from scoring 523. I don't think a 5 man attack would fare any worse but bringing in Taylor would definitely strengthen a batting lineup which I repeat, still only has 2 quality specialist batsmen.

I see Steve Smith and Joe Root have both played 33 Tests. Smith averaging 56.3 and eleven tons to Root's 55.9 and eight. Probably have to recognise that Smith was disadvantaged for a while by batting down in the lower order.

He looked a different class today.

Compare with other notable England batters after 33 Tests. Average/hundreds

Root 55.9/8
KP 50.4/10
MPV 47.4/9
Strauss 45.2/10
Cook 42.9/7
Bell 42.5/6

Fair enough but I don't think he's faced the same class of bowling as the others did at the same stage of their careers - purely from memory of course.

Anyway a great effort by England - that pitch wasn't made for strokeplay and I'm not surprised England found it difficult to score boundaries with fielders back on the ropes. Bit disappointed with the time wasting tactics - very poor.

Bell did help himself to some easy runs against Bangladesh.
