Australia A v India A & South Africa A

Postby from_the_stands » Tue Jul 19, 2016 8:34 am

The next generation of international stars get some good exposure in this years "winter season," with a host of matches being played in northern Australia. The South Africans are first up, with 2 unofficial Tests to take place; the first at AB Field in Brisvegas, with the second in Townsville. The quadrangular ODI series then takes place, with the National performance squad involved once more, with the season concluding with 2 Tests against India A, both matches being played at AB Field.

I did have the Oz squads somewhere, and will post it when I do find it. I'm looking forward to seeing how Victorian youngster Travis Dean performs after his first stellar Sheffield Shield season. Peter Handscomb is the other Victorian of note, who is just about there in terms of banging on the door of the selectors. One man who is banging on the door, is Queenslander Chris Lynn, who will also feature in these matches.

Should be an interesting 6 weeks.

Australia A squad: Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Scott Boland, Cameron Boyce, Pat Cummins, Travis Dean, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Sam Heazlett, Moises Henriques, Jake Lehmann, Chris Lynn, Joe Mennie, Kurtis Patterson, Joel Paris, Matt Renshaw, Kane Richardson, Alex Ross, Chadd Sayers, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Swepson, Chris Tremain, Dan Worrall, Sam Whiteman.

Out of this squad, I'd go for a starting XI as follows;

Cameron Bancroft
Travis Dean
Chris Lynn (c)
Peter Handscomb
Travis Head
Moises Henriques (v/c)
Sam Whiteman
Ashton Agar
Scott Boland
Chadd Sayers
Joel Paris

Pat Cummins will only be playing in the ODI's. I'm a bit disappointed that Jason Behrendorff isn't in the frame here (unless he's injured).

Australia A had a comfortable win in the opening Test, with Chris Tremain and Joe Mennie taking 5 wicket hauls and Marcus Stoinis scoring a century in the first dig. The next Test will be played up in Townsville.

South Africa A comprehensively thumped Australia A today

Massive win for India A against the Aussie Kids.
Which makes india A go top of the table in the halfway stage of the competition.
And remarkably this is NPS first defeat of the competition.

Undakat had a good day with the ball but is still missing something for me.

After a ropey start Australia A are looking to be the likely winners of this competition.

The two India matches are scheduled in the first couple of weeks in September. The Oz selectors have named the squads for both matches;

Squad for first match Peter Handscomb (capt), Joe Burns (vice-capt), Cameron Bancroft, Travis Dean, David Moody, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Marcus Stoinis, Mitch Swepson, Beau Webster, Sam Whiteman, Daniel Worrall.

Squad for second match Joe Burns (capt), Kurtis Patterson (vice-capt), Jackson Bird, Hilton Cartwright, Travis Dean, Sam Heazlett, Jon Holland, David Moody, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Beau Webster, Sam Whiteman.

It's a positive sign that some of these players are getting the chance to prove themselves. Across both fixtures, I'd say that the leading prospects being closely examined are; Peter Handscomb, Cameron Bancroft, Travis Dean and Kurtis Patterson. I'm disappointed that Chris Lynn is missing, surely he's the next cab off the rank as far as batting is concerned. Sam Whiteman appears to be well placed should the selectors decide that they've had enough of Peter Nevill, who is a very fine gloveman, but simply hasn't delivered the goods with the bat.

I only knew this was going on 5 minutes ago.

As I said on another thread, Cricket gets very little coverage in the media at this time of the year. Even when it is in Australia.
