Bloody well done by Khawaja. I've never been that impressed with him, even when he was scoring centuries last summer, as the pitches were flat and the bowling poor, but he really stood up yesterday and will make sure that the Aussies have a solid lead.

Still a long way to go, but Australia are well placed so save a bit of face in the series, and avoid the ignominy of a whitewash.

Its far easier to illustrate the main point I was making by using that terminology of Renshaw being "English". In hindsight, had I thought about it, saying "dual passport holders" are in both sides would have acheived the same. I was simply using the example to say there is an emergence of this being an "equal" problem for both boards, and that regardless of what a player considers themselves, money and influence from the top can sway people into accepting to play for a team they dont necessarily want to.

I do understand the desire to ensure that if someone is playing for a national team, they do so because they want to and are proud to represent the country of their home, rather than doing so because the money/opportunity offered by that country were too good to resist and they otherwise consider themselves to belong to another country. But there's a big difference between mercenary players and people who happen to have been brought up in one country wanting to make their home in another, IMO.

thats regardless of whether they hold a UK passport or not

OK. That interesting. And good - although the 7 years seems a bit extreme.

Some strings were pulled, then, in the case of Fawad Ahmed. Three years after arriving in Australia, he played for T20 team

those are the ECB's own rules for the england team, they are not the same across all countries, each board can set its own thresholds

i think one thing that gets missed alot of time in these discussions is the distinction between being a national team and a representative team of the cricket board and the ability of each board to define its own eligibility rules. WICB being the extreme example, ie the board's own constitution determines players from which caribbean countries can represent the WICB.

50 for starc, lead up to almost 100 now with still 3 wickets left

you would think this is a matchwinning position for australia

really soft dismissal from starc, just quit on the shot and dollied it back to the bowler

aus all out for 383, 124 runs ahead

tough for SA to get back into this but the pitch has looked pretty good to bat on

Hashim Amla's last ten Tests away from home dating back to August 2014: 233 runs at 16.64. Highest score of 47

Day 3 at Adelaide is renowned for being a good batting day. So i would expect SA to get a handy lead.

Interesting that the 4 new players for Australia scored 68 runs between them. And that 54 for of them came from one player. Seems that the problems are still there. I guess S Marsh when fit will come back in for one of the 3 new batters, it will be interesting to see which 2 can keep their places.

Interesting stat just given on du Plessis - 5 tests in Aus, and he has an average of 98. That itself is nothing so notable, but given that his highest score in this is 118*, it shows that he has been very consistent.

very strange referral by Bavuma just now. He must have known that he hit it (I actually thought he had gloved it).

I think that it was poor of the umps to allow the referral after such a long wait - even though it worked out well for Aus.

actually it was only about 17 seconds. I just wound back and measured it.

My apology to the umps.
