Well superstitions are generally engrained in people on the simple fact that they try always to replicate what is successful, or what feels good, without really knowing why. I think Tiger Woods was famous for always wearing red on a final day of golf majors because he felt the first time he did it, the colour made him feel good, and subsequently gave him extra power. Someone like Trott or Alec Stewart had very flamboyant, lengthy and mechanical processes between balls. If they didnt do it, then they didnt feel right, so doing it made them feel better as players. If they stopped, they started to think as players they had come far in their career doing it a certain way, so they might not have the same levels of skill if they changed. Maybe some players feel this way about technique in general and this is a reason they are deemed uncoachable? I know as a golfer its hard to get coaching or changes into your swing, it feels so alien and counter acting for so long after. You have to train to engrain it into habit.

Wish I'd made it up, but sadly I overheard it at work.

Curious that England have been saying they made a mistake in packing their batting with left handers, yet have called up a left handed opener.

Hey, 16personalities didn't suggest that as a characteristic. I'm pointlessly principled.

just to add to some of SPs posts above about the psychological stuff and what i briefly mentioned about their use

they aren't intended to be used to "sort out the wheat from the chaff", there really isn't a right or wrong profile to have. cricket is still about having the talent to play cricket.

they are intended to be used to identify the best way to get the most out of people, they are meant to be used to give an insight into what are natural and un-natural reactions to situations, and to help managers know when they need to do something and what the best approach is.

for example if you have just lost a game and player A is sitting alone in a corner not saying much then that might not be anything to worry about, its just his natural behaviour in that situation, whereas if player B is sitting alone in a corner not saying much then that might indicate he is not handling it well. all of the personality types are also just indicators of whats called "preferred behaviour", ie that is the way someone will normally react to or deal with a situation. we all have the choice to react in a different way and go against that preferred behaviour.

bottom line the info from these tests should only ever be used as an indicator not a definitive answer and its about how individuals and managers themselves use the information that is the most important point.

We know from Downton and Flower's policy on player management and development (Pathway to Success or whatever it was called) that these psychological assessments are used at even schoolboy levels to seperate players. Yet I tend to think that they are there to simply validate whatever the coaching staff want them to.

I think deep down Flower is a guy that makes his own judgement based on how receptive a player is to his own ideas. I cant prove that, but thats what I judge on his words in the past. Whereas when a player doesnt engage in the way he likes it, these "tests" are mentioned in order to justify it. In reality, the face doesnt fit, or the player simply might not be the model professional, or in Flower's case, might actually have a personality and question the value of his coaching and the team ethic.

Yet surely a player has proved enough about themselves in their performance to get to the Lions? Well, the answer is no! Flower's whole thing is that players can be created, not found. He seems suspicious of those players that are performing, almost like its proof to the contrary of his whole existance.

But thats me.... and on the list of historical figures, I put Andy Flower in the same category as Genghis Khan, Stalin and Adolf Hitler.
