Since the last WC, his record is pretty similar to Kohli's. VKs SR is 3 better, that's all.

it is and when we have guys like buttler, stokes, moeen and roy in the top 7 then root's job is to set a platform, something he does consistently, even tho statistically he ranks close to smith and kohli he doesn't dominate games like they do

Yet he has a similar number of hundreds and fifties as Smith, and only one fewer hundred, but six more fifties than Kohli. He's been a big part of England's recovery since the last WC.

Fair enough, room for improvement, but from a high base.

i'm not disagreeing with you statistically AC

i'm saying that from my perspective he doesn't dominate games like those two do

he is, alongside buttler, first names on the team sheet for england in ODIs, i just want him to convert more of the starts he gets

Morgan's record is very good there. Buttler's phenomenal.

dont know how many different ways i can say this but i know statistically he is right up there

but as a viewer, and someone who has watched probably 90%+ of all the games on that list, i dont think he stands out individually like some of the others do

to me he sets the platform for the guys around him, but when it comes to the difference between scoring 320 or 350 it's someone else that does the "special" bit to get those 30 extra runs, whereas kohli and smith not only set the platform they also finish it off

maybe not explaining it very well but thats the best i can do, think i'll leave it at that because i'm probably making no sense

I don't actually believe there is any "problem" with Root in the ODI side.

He bats at three ; his role is surely to be busy from the start but make very sure he doesn't throw his innings away early - to build a platform for the more natural big hitters to exploit in the latter part of the innings. In a way it is similar to the "old style" Trott role - but adjusted for the New Era. And just as in the past , once his primary task has been more or less accomplished , he is free to launch his own assault : at which point , he quite often - as in this game - gets out.
For the most part , this has worked rather well for England's ODIs. Buttler , Stokes , etc have done what they're paid to do and the team has scored big totals. (Had both these not failed in this game , likely would have been a new England record for a successful run chase)

Problem in this game was the bowlers left just too big a task and despite Morgan's heroics they fell just short. (Incidentally , I assume the "Morgan Must Go" campaign is back on ice for a bit now ?) We shouldn't allow two - quite close - defeats in high scoring matches to have us jumping at shadows. The batting is pretty damn good.

The bowling obviously remains a work in progress. Lack of quality spin , in India , is a problem without an obvious solution - though I do feel last night Moeen ought to have been brought back at some point rather than just allow the pace men to keep bashing away. As for the quicks , Woakes was excellent , Willey good early and probably should also have been tried again , though his style is arguably ill-suited to the late overs in the situation that prevailed . Plunkett (who is often much better) had a shocker , Ball still wears L plates , and Stokes looks tired to me...They will all be better on home soil ; but I think there are places to be contested there. Rather hoping they have learned something for the third ODI ...

Sorry, wasn't intending to disagree. Just making the same point several times over. I accept he might dominate a match a bit more at times.

When comparing batting we should take into account that England are often facing better bowling that our opponents.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Criticism of root seems bizarre to me. A bit like saying a 30 goal striker is not performing because he scored only 1 goal in a 6-5 defeat where the keeper and defence makes mistakes for 90 minutes.

England's batting is far from broken and for me above criticism. As a team we are breezing past 300 with ease now....

If you can't defend 350, then ita nothing to do with batsman. The critique that a player maybe could bat better and you could score 400 every innings seems a little contrived
