Seems England fielding same squad which lost ODI series in India. Well, from the players point of view the flop players cannot complain about ECB not backing the players who have flopped.
Test FL's - 8 , ODI and Tests Combo FL's - 1, ODI World Cup - 1, ODI FL's - 7, ODI and T20i combo FL's - 1 ,
T20 Franchisee FL's - 7, T20i Cup FL's- 1, T20 FL's- 5 , 50 Overs Domestic FL's - 1, 40 Overs Domestic FL's- 1

The England squad for the Champions Trophy is almost decided - 14 certainties, the above 14 minus Dawson plus Hales. The last place ideally goes to Wood, otherwise one of Dawson, Topley, Jordan, Finn or Broad. From outside the squad, the Lions have already played their one-days games this winter which leaves little opportunity for the likes of either Curran or Roland-Jones to make their case.

The bowlers may have struggled in India, but then they are in Indian conditions and the Indian quicks haven't exactly faired much better in their own conditions. Our quicks will be stronger in England, therefore there should be no rush to drop players.

As for the strongest XI, I've seen some suggestions BTL in a few places that Billings should open over Hales. I just don't get that. Hales scored 3 centuries last year, with 5 scores of 50+ against South Africa, plus the highest ever score by an England batsman in the format. His supposed loss of form this winter is all of 2 games.

Billings has only played 2 recent ODIs - a good 50 against Bangladesh and then a scratchy 30-odd against India - plus the current T20 series. It's only 'potential' which he has, but with a global tournament 6 months away I want performances. He'll need some big scores in the Windies to get a starting place once everyone is fit, but his place in the squad should be set.

I'm also really glad that Morgan's got a couple of scores behind him. Again, there's just 6 months until the Champions Trophy. To change captain would be mad. Before the last World Cup, we changed captain too close to the tournament (should have been done much earlier!), and Australia didn't benefit at the WT20 last year when they dumped Finch for Smith.

Hales is a sure starter. He had a great year!

If fit I'd guess Wood and Topley would be in, but I don't know if they are expected to be. My hunch is Jordan will sneak back in for the last place.

If anyone else outside the squad was pushing for a batting place (Vince/Duckett) they'd have replaced Hales in the Caribbean. Quite unusual that they have just left the place vacant.

2016 England batting stats. Only Buttler had a better year than Hales. I know it's not your view Matt, and I saw you were arguing for Hales on The Guardian site.

So much knee jerking goes on on that site. Posters were talking Root out of the team. And there's a group mentality that being captain stops you from scoring runs when there's just no evidence for that at all. Even the normally sane hblove has been fighting a one man war against Morgan.

Aside from yourself, Silk and holdingahighline (who's a good shout for the best cricket writer on the Guardian) the site's pretty poor now in my opinion.

Lack of cash after lending all that money to Durham.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Yeah but it's the only online paper to offer a decent BTL - i.e. enough articles, enough posters, threaded replies.

I really should comment there less, but I get bored and I bite too easily (also stuck in an argument about whether Stokes is worth his place in the Test team. Yes, really...)

Yes, I spotted that. Someone on that thread has now decided that Vaughan was one of the few players who did better as a captain whereas he's the only real example of a batter who actually got worse as skipper (though he also got a career ending injury at the same time).
