I know this is the wrong section but what the hell - Proud coach (and dad) moment!!! My little team of champions just won our first ever tournament! Not bad considering we'd never even played a competitive match before! :party

It was on Sunday but I'm still buzzing, and we won every game as well. There were 8 teams entered in the 7 year old age group and these were split into 2 groups of 4 playing 6-a-side 6 over matches and the winners of each group would contest the final. We won all 3 group games, the first by 31 runs, the second by 74 runs and the third by 39 runs.

Having won all 3 group games we were looking forward to the final against a side that had also won all 3 of their group games, so a tough final beckoned. There was a standout moment when RD Jr came out to bat and the opposition (who'd been paying attention to our games) immediately went to their best bowler who came off a long run and had his first ball lofted straight back over his head for a boundary by RD Jr :D . At the end of the match they'd saved their best batters for the final push, but I'd saved our best 2 bowlers as well so RD Jr came on to bowl the penultimate over and bowled a wicket maiden that basically sealed victory. We won by 18 runs.

RD Jr finished the comp with 3-5 off 5 overs; the other boys had solid figures too like 4 overs 0-13, 3 overs 0-10, 4 overs 0-16, 3 overs 0-16, 3 overs 0-17 and 2 overs 1-6

RD Jr also scored 24 off 16 balls, one of the other boys scored 26 off 17 balls and another scored 13 off 21 and one scored 11 off 12 balls, although the other 3 struggled a bit with 3 off 8, 2 off 7 and 1 off 12.

One of the key differences was the fielding, we managed to pick up 9 run outs during the comp and only suffered one ourselves. the other big difference was the number of wides that other teams sent down - we got lots of extras, whereas I've been pretty harsh on our boys in training and they tend to bowl reasonably properly. also, the other teams were often throwing rather than bowling, but the umps gave up trying to address that!

Overall, a pretty awesome first comp as a coach :)

well done to Red Jnr, the new Ben Stokes !

sounds like you had a great day Red

getting kids involved in organised sport is something i dont think we as a country take seriously enough, the social skills alone that come from being in that sort of environment are invaluable

Yes, well done the Reds.

Big cup on the sideboard now I suppose.

If people still have sideboards.

Thanks guys - the cup is not that big, it's more of a shield! i'll make sure each of the kids has it for a week over the summer before it goes off to the club.

I'm not sure what that is but I think we call them wind balls - they don't start hard ball cricket until they are 9.

Season ball (SG, Kookabura etc ) and season bat (Kashmir willow and English willow) are terms used here commonly instead of hard cricket ball.

We give kids who are 6 yrs or so to start with synthetic balls so that they get used to hardness gradually and get prepared for season balls. Even after 20 mins of fielding drill when palms used to pain a bit i used to switch to synthetic balls fo rlast 10 mins of fielding drill. It is less painful than hard ball,so useful to practice if carrying hand niggle. The other advantage of synthtic ball is that it gets less damaged due to water during monsoon or on wet practice area.

Synthetic balls is good poduct and innovation for kids who just cant wait to enter club cicket at early age.

yep, that's what we use. I think I'll introduce the hard ball next winter when the boys are 8 going on for 9.

I've been taking RD junior to winter nets at lords and the coaches have said he should be playing up a few years and starting hardball - so I've got all his gear together and he looks like Michelin man with his pads, thigh guards, box and helmet on!

Managed to get him a Newberry bat as well - English willow grade 3 in a size 1 - and have been annoying the missus as I've been knocking it in with the mallet in the evenings!

He'll be playing 10/11 year olds tomorrow so that's quite a jump for a seven year old who hasn't actually played hardball yet - will be interesting to see how he goes.

Well done on the new bat. The mallet is not required for bats pressed in factory. Where is the middle of the bat. :?:

not noticed this thread before.

intrigued by the format played. The only kids cricket I've seen involved 10 man teams everyone bowling 2 overs only, and batsmen batting in pairs 4 overs apiece with a run deduction for dismissals. How does yours work?

yeah, that's the format once the kids get to about 10 years old.

Last year RD Jr was playing 6 a side with each player bowling 1 over and each pair batting 2 overs - but he had only just turned 7 years old. At the age of 8 or 9 I think it's 8 a side with each pair still batting 2 overs and each player still bowling 1 over.
